Kash Patel Accused of Epstein 'Cover-Up' and Diverting 1,000 FBI Personnel To Flag Trump Mentions

FBI Director Kash Patel has been accused of playing a central role in a Trump administration 'cover-up' of the Jeffrey Epstein files, including allegedly diverting more than 1,000 bureau personnel to identify documents mentioning the president.

Senator Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, levelled the allegations during Patel's annual oversight hearing on Tuesday as the FBI chief faced intense questioning over his leadership of the bureau.

'Director Patel has played a key role in the Trump administration's cover-up of the Epstein files,' Durbin said. He accused Patel of pulling FBI personnel away from other assignments to review Epstein-related records and 'flag any records in which Trump's name was mentioned'.

More Than 1,000 FBI Personnel Assigned To Review

Durbin's accusation builds on information his office says it received from a whistleblower in 2025. According to the Senate Judiciary Committee, approximately 1,000 employees from the FBI's Information Management Division were put on round-the-clock shifts for roughly two weeks to review around 100,000 Epstein-related records.

Hundreds of additional personnel from the FBI's New York Field Office reportedly joined the effort. Durbin's office said those conducting the review were specifically instructed to flag documents mentioning Trump.

The review preceded a July 2025 memorandum from the Justice Department and FBI stating that investigators had found no incriminating Epstein 'client list'.

Patel has disputed portrayals of the operation as an effort to protect Trump. During previous congressional testimony, he called reporting about a Trump-specific review 'baseless' and said the FBI had shifted resources because of intense public and congressional demand for information about the Epstein case.

Durbin Raises White House Situation Room Meetings

Durbin also accused Patel of taking part in White House Situation Room discussions about managing political fallout from the Epstein controversy.

'When scrutiny of the cover-up intensified, you participated in meetings in the White House Situation Room to strategise about how to protect President Trump,' Durbin said.

Reports said that Patel participated in high-level White House discussions over the administration's handling of the Epstein controversy, although Durbin's description of the meetings as specifically intended to 'protect' Trump is his characterisation.

In one reported Situation Room meeting on 17 July 2025, Vice-President JD Vance, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and White House counsel David Warrington discussed how to respond to the escalating controversy. Patel and then-Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly joined the discussion by speakerphone.

Kash Patel Defends FBI Record

Patel used Tuesday's hearing to paint a sharply different picture of his tenure. He touted falling violent crime, arrests of dangerous fugitives and the bureau's work against gangs, traffickers and drug networks, arguing that his FBI had made Americans safer.

Committee chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican, similarly praised crime statistics showing increased arrests under Patel.

Durbin, however, accused the director of diverting the bureau towards Trump's political priorities, including investigations surrounding the 2020 election and the president's perceived opponents.

The Epstein dispute remains particularly sensitive because Patel himself once publicly criticised the FBI for withholding information about the disgraced financier. Now running the bureau, he faces the opposite accusation: that the FBI under his leadership allegedly devoted extraordinary resources not simply to reviewing Epstein's files, but to tracking where the president appeared in them.
