Kat Dennings Reveals Tom Hardy Drove Her Home After Her Mad Max Audition and Stayed for Tea With Her Mum

Kat Dennings has revealed the unexpectedly wholesome ending to one of her most gruelling Hollywood auditions, recalling how Tom Hardy drove her home after their six-hour chemistry read for Mad Max: Fury Road — before staying behind to have tea with her mother.

The actress recently shared the story on social media, looking back at the audition for George Miller's 2015 blockbuster. Dennings had tested opposite Hardy, who was being considered for Max Rockatansky, while she was among the actresses auditioning for the role that ultimately went to Charlize Theron.

While Dennings remembers the audition itself as an exhausting and bizarre experience, she says Hardy's kindness afterwards left a much more lasting impression.

Kat Dennings Describes the Six-Hour Audition

Dennings explained that the audition was far more intense than a typical chemistry read.

She described the experience as essentially being 'an acting class, if it was on the worst day of your life', with the actors subjected to a series of unconventional exercises designed to test their chemistry and ability to react instinctively.

At one point, Dennings said she and Hardy were instructed to switch roles while cameras followed them running around a corner.

The strangest exercise involved the acting coach telling them to perform their dialogue without actually speaking the lines.

Instead, they were encouraged to make sounds and communicate the scene without using the scripted words.

Dennings admitted she was 'dying' during the exercise, although she noticed that Hardy appeared to embrace the unusual approach.

According to the actress, Hardy was able to become 'extremely free' during the exercise and come up with creative ways to perform the scenes.

After hours of auditions, however, Dennings was not convinced that she would get the part.

Tom Hardy Offered to Drive Her Home

The most memorable part of the story came after the audition was finally over.

Dennings said that she did not have a car at the time and had been preparing to find another way home. Hardy apparently heard about her situation and offered to give her a lift.

'He drove me home. He was so lovely,' Dennings recalled.

The journey itself would have been a thoughtful gesture, but the encounter did not end when they arrived.

Dennings was still living with her parents, so Hardy ended up meeting her mother after accompanying her inside.

She recalled Hardy commenting on what a nice house it was before she eventually went to the converted garage where she lived, changed into her pyjamas and took a nap.

What happened next is the part of the story that Dennings clearly remembers most fondly.

Hardy Stayed for Tea With Her Mother

When Dennings returned to the main house several hours later, she discovered that Hardy had not left.

Instead, the actor was apparently still there, sitting with her mother and having tea.

'Tom Hardy is still there, having tea with my mother, and just chatting it up,' Dennings recalled.

The actress appeared amused by the unexpected situation, particularly because she had assumed the interaction was over after Hardy dropped her home.

The visit nevertheless left such a positive impression that Dennings said her mother still talks about Hardy.

She also made her own feelings about the actor clear, saying: 'I will be a fan of his for life. I think he's a wonderful person.'

Kat Dennings Did Not Get the Mad Max Role

Despite completing the lengthy chemistry read with Hardy, Dennings ultimately did not appear in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Theron was cast as Imperator Furiosa, while Hardy took on the title role of Max Rockatansky. The film went on to become a major critical and commercial success, earning numerous Academy Award nominations and winning six Oscars.

Dennings, meanwhile, continued with her own career and became particularly recognisable for playing Darcy Lewis in Marvel's Thor films, later returning to the role in WandaVision and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Yet years later, it seems the audition is remembered less for the role she missed out on and more for what happened afterwards.

A six-hour Hollywood audition could have simply ended with an unsuccessful screen test. Instead, Dennings walked away with a memorable story about Hardy offering her a lift home, meeting her mother and unexpectedly staying for tea.

And judging by Dennings' account, the audition may have been brutal.
