A new book claims Kate Middleton and Prince William did not meet at St Andrews University after all - they actually met long before starting their degrees.

In her new book, royal biographer Katie Nicholl says that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge knew each other before they enrolled at St. Andrews University in 2001. The book entitled Kate: The Future Queen reveals that Kate met Prince William through some common friends.

Nicholl, who is royal correspondent for The Mail on Sunday and a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, divulged the content of her book on an American talk show named Katie, hosted by ABC News correspondent Katie Couric.

"This was really fascinating for me. I was speaking to some of her friends at Marlborough School, which was where she went before St. Andrews, and they said "uh uh, she didn't meet him at St. Andrews. She met him before she got there...through some of her friends. They knew Prince William and Prince Harry,'" Nicholl told Couric, according to US Weekly.

In the episode, entitled Never-Before-Told Stories About Kate Middleton, Nicholl further said that Kate Middleton dropped her long-cherished dream to study at Edinburgh, took a gap year and reapplied to St. Andrews to be with Prince William. The bestseller author has disclosed the same in her book.

It is widely believed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 31, met during their college years. Even Clarence House mentioned it in Kate's official biography.

"The Duchess first met The Duke of Cambridge when studying at the University," it states.

However, where and when the royal couple actually met for the first time remains the subject of speculation.

William and Kate attended St. Andrews together from 2001 to 2005. While Kate graduated in History of Art, Prince William majored in Geography. William proposed to his long-term girlfriend on a private holiday in Kenya in November 2010.

They wed in April 2011, after over a decade of courtship, and welcomed their first child, Prince George, in July.
