Haakon Becomes Norway's King Amid Wife Mette-Marit's Epstein Links and Stepson's Rape Case

King Haakon VIII has formally assumed the Norwegian crown following the peaceful death of his father, King Harald V, at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, 28 August, at the age of 89.

Haakon inherits the crown during a profoundly turbulent period characterised by public unease over recent controversies, including Queen Mette-Marit's historical correspondence with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and her son Marius Borg Høiby's ongoing criminal proceedings.

Furthermore, Mette-Marit continues to recover from a serious lung transplant operation following a protracted battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

As the 53-year-old monarch prepares to take his formal parliamentary oath and navigate plummeting national approval ratings, he faces the formidable challenge of safeguarding the institutional credibility his predecessor built.

Mette-Marit's Epstein Links

The Mette-Marit Epstein links resurfaced forcefully after documents released in the US showed that she corresponded with Epstein between 2011 and 2014, years after his conviction for sex offences.

Reports said the files contained almost 1,000 references to Mette-Marit, including personal exchanges, prompting renewed questions about why contact continued after Epstein had already been publicly disgraced and convicted.

The controversy concerns Mette-Marit's association and judgment. There is no established evidence in the material cited here that she participated in Epstein's crimes.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre publicly criticised what he called her 'poor judgment', an unusually blunt intervention involving the royal household.

The second major controversy concerns Marius Borg Høiby, Mette-Marit's 29-year-old son from a previous relationship and Haakon's stepson.

In June, Høiby was convicted of 34 offences, including two counts of rape, domestic violence, and other crimes, and sentenced to four years in prison. Høiby and prosecutors have appealed aspects of the ruling, so the judgment is not yet final.

Høiby does not hold a royal title or carry out official royal duties. But his relationship to Mette-Marit means his case has inevitably become part of the wider scrutiny surrounding the Norwegian royal household.

One detail has made the situation particularly striking. Høiby has been held under electronic monitoring at Skaugum, the residence of Haakon and Mette-Marit, while his case is being appealed. An Oslo court recently extended his house arrest for another four weeks, through 7 September.

Mette-Marit's Health Crisis

The controversy comes as Mette-Marit is also dealing with a serious health crisis. Mette-Marit has a serious lung condition and underwent a lung transplant in July, adding another deeply personal dimension to the transition as her husband assumes the responsibilities of the crown.

For Haakon, the succession therefore arrives amid a family situation involving health concerns, public controversy and an ongoing criminal appeal.

A King Prepared for the Crown

The new king has a formidable act to follow. Harald, who reigned from 1991, became widely admired for his warmth, humility, and ability to represent national unity. After the 2011 terrorist attacks carried out by Anders Behring Breivik, which killed 77 people, his message of solidarity became one of the defining moments of his reign.

He also championed diversity and inclusion, helping establish a modern image for the Norwegian monarchy. That popularity matters because Haakon is taking over while public confidence in the institution has weakened.

A Monarchy Under Pressure

Polling earlier this year showed support for retaining Norway's monarchy had fallen significantly from previous levels, with one February poll putting support at 61%, compared with 72% a year earlier. Separate polling found substantial opposition to Mette-Marit becoming queen.

The numbers underline why the controversies surrounding the royal household matter beyond palace walls. Haakon has inherited his father's crown and legacy, but he also faces a very different public climate.

Norway now has a new king. His challenge is not simply to follow Harald, but to build public confidence in his own reign while navigating controversies involving people closest to him.
