'Girls' Revival Set for 2027 as Lena Dunham and Her Co-Stars Prepare To Revisit Their Iconic Characters
HBO has confirmed a five-episode run, although the broadcaster has yet to announce a release date

Lena Dunham is bringing Girls back to HBO, with the original cast set to reunite for a five-episode revival that is scheduled to begin production in 2027.
HBO announced the limited run on Tuesday, 13 October, confirming that Dunham will return as Hannah Horvath alongside Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro and Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz.
The announcement comes with a reunion clip shared by HBO Max on TikTok, in which the cast joke about spending another summer together and whether the show's title still fits. The video offers a playful look at the group's return, while the new episodes are set to revisit the characters years after the original series ended.
The Cast Reunites for Five Episodes
The limited series will consist of five episodes, with production due to start in 2027. HBO has not announced a release date.
Judd Apatow, who executive-produced the original series, will executive-produce the new episodes alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells will also serve as co-executive producers.
The original Girls ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017. The comedy followed a group of young women navigating work, relationships and life in New York, with Dunham creating and starring in the series as Hannah.
Dunham Says the Story Felt Worth Revisiting
Dunham said the team would only return if there was a specific story worth telling. She explained that she had struggled to imagine where the characters would be in the present day, but ideas began to emerge around her 40th birthday.
The writer and actor described revisiting the characters with hindsight, gratitude and a better understanding of the years that have passed. The revival will therefore return to the group at a later stage of life, rather than simply recreate the circumstances of the original series.
HBO executive vice-president and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy programming Amy Gravitt also reflected on turning 40 and how much the world has changed since viewers last saw the characters.
Reunion Clip Jokes About the Show's Title
In the TikTok clip, the cast discuss whether they would do Girls again the following summer. Rannells delivers the line, 'I'm in, but only cause you trash cans need constant supervision'.
The conversation also turns to the show's title, with Dunham asking, 'Seriously, can we still call it girls?'. The exchange nods to the years since the original series ended, while keeping the reunion's tone light. It also reflects a question the revival will have to address: how the characters' lives and relationships have changed since audiences last saw them.
Adam Driver's Involvement Remains Unconfirmed
Adam Driver, who played Hannah's on-and-off partner Adam Sackler in the original series, was not included in HBO's announced list of returning cast members. HBO has not confirmed whether he will appear in the revival.
For now, the confirmed return centres on Dunham, Kirke, Mamet, Rannells and Williams, with the five-episode run offering a new chapter for the characters. Production is expected to begin in 2027, although further casting and release details have yet to be announced.
