Dimitar Berbatov's agents have finally confirmed that they did speak to Bayer Leverkusen about the possibilities of the Bulgarian striker returning to the club.

Berbatov's contract with Manchester United ends this summer. A free transfer is possible for him next month if the customary 12-month extension at Old Trafford doesn't happen.

"Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov. There is contact, but nothing concrete yet. It all depends on United's plans. We wait until 2 January," Ivan Dobrinov, one of Berbatov's agents, told the German newspaper Bild. "Berbatov has a good relationship with the leadership at Bayer," Dobrinov added.

"Until then, United have the option but if that does not happen then Berbatov would be a free transfer in the summer," Dobrinov told the paper.

Leverkusen officials have confirmed the talks.

Berbatov's hat-trick was key to the Red Devils' sweeping victory over Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
