Netflix has entered early production for the fifth season of its Regency-era drama Bridgerton, with the series preparing to shift its focus to another member of the Bridgerton family. Following Benedict Bridgerton's storyline in the fourth season, which premiered earlier in 2026, the next instalment will centre on Francesca Bridgerton.

Series author Julia Quinn confirmed the direction of the new season in an interview with Mashable on 7 March. Quinn said the upcoming storyline draws heavily from her sixth Bridgerton novel, When He Was Wicked, which follows Francesca's complicated romantic journey involving the Stirling family.

The television adaptation, produced by Shonda Rhimes's Shondaland, has followed a format of dedicating each season to the romantic story of one Bridgerton sibling. Earlier seasons focused on Daphne, Anthony and Colin, while the fourth season highlighted Benedict's narrative.

Francesca's Storyline and the Stirling Family

Francesca Bridgerton's story will continue following events introduced in the fourth season, which showed her marriage to John Stirling. Quinn has said the storyline will explore themes from the original novel, including grief, attraction and the complicated emotions that develop after the loss of a loved one.

The adaptation has introduced a notable change from the books by gender-swapping the character Michael Stirling into Michaela Stirling. Quinn explained that the change was intended to broaden representation in the series while keeping the core elements of the story intact.

The upcoming season is expected to explore Francesca's life after relocating to Scotland, which expands the geographical setting of the show beyond the London social scene known as the 'ton'.

Eloise Bridgerton's Future Storyline

While Francesca's narrative is expected to lead the fifth season, Eloise Bridgerton remains one of the siblings whose story has yet to take centre stage. The character, played by Claudia Jessie, has been defined throughout the series by her scepticism toward traditional courtship and her interest in intellectual pursuits.

In the original novels, Eloise's story is told in To Sir Phillip, With Love. The plot centres on a correspondence between Eloise and Sir Phillip Crane, a widower who was introduced earlier in the television adaptation.

Showrunner Jess Brownell previously told People magazine that Eloise's development has been planned across multiple seasons. Brownell also indicated that established characters, including Kate Sharma, may play a role in guiding Eloise through later chapters of her story.

Production Timeline and Future Seasons

Production planning for the next season is already underway as the series prepares for its next lead storyline. Filming is expected to take place across historic UK locations frequently used by the production, including areas in Bath and surrounding estates.

The large-scale nature of the production requires early planning for casting, choreography and costume design. Lead actors are typically confirmed well before filming begins to allow for rehearsals and preparation.

Bridgerton remains one of Netflix's most successful period dramas and continues to expand through spin-offs and related projects. As the series progresses through the remaining Bridgerton siblings, Francesca's story is expected to guide the narrative of the upcoming season while Eloise's arc continues to develop for a future instalment. Netflix previously confirmed that Bridgerton has been renewed through at least a sixth season.
