A street in South Wales has been cordoned off after two people were injured in a shooting.

Armed police were called to reports of gunshots in Newport. They found a man and a woman who had been seriously injured.

Police said they were not looking for anyone in connection with the incident and added that the pair were known to each other.

A firearm was recovered.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "Police were called to Willenhall Street, Newport, after a report of what sounded like gunshots had been fired.

"Armed police attended and found a male and female injured.

"Both have been taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital."
