AMD Radeon RX 9050 Buyers Beware: Why the Mysterious OEM GPU Falls 37% Behind the 8GB Model

AMD's mysterious Radeon RX 9050 4GB has finally been put through independent gaming tests, revealing a striking performance gap that buyers of prebuilt PCs may want to watch closely.

Hardware Unboxed tested the OEM-only graphics card across 18 games at 1080p Low, where it averaged 78 frames per second (FPS), compared with 107 FPS for the Radeon RX 9050 8GB. That means the 8GB version was around 37% faster despite the two graphics cards sharing the same RX 9050 name and core specifications.

Radeon RX 9050 4GB Benchmarks Reveal 37% Gap

The difference extended beyond average frame rates. Hardware Unboxed recorded 1% lows of 55 FPS for the Radeon RX 9050 4GB, while the 8GB model achieved 78 FPS.

Even when tested at the lowest settings, the performance gap remained substantial. The 4GB card managed 111 FPS compared with 147 FPS for its 8GB counterpart, leaving the higher-memory model around 32% faster.

The results are particularly notable because both Radeon RX 9050 variants feature 1,024 Stream Processors and boost frequencies of up to 2.6 GHz. AMD's official specifications also list 16 Compute Units, 16 Ray Accelerators and 32 AI Accelerators for the 4GB GPU.

Why Is the Radeon RX 9050 4GB Slower?

The biggest differences lie in the graphics memory configuration.

AMD lists the Radeon RX 9050 4GB with a 64-bit memory interface, up to 144 GB/s of bandwidth and 16MB of Infinity Cache. Its GDDR6 memory runs at up to 18 Gbps.

By comparison, the RX 9050 8GB uses a 128-bit interface and provides 288 GB/s of memory bandwidth, effectively doubling both the VRAM capacity and bandwidth available to the GPU. Its Infinity Cache is also twice as large at 32MB.

That distinction means the 4GB card is not simply an RX 9050 with less VRAM. Its narrower memory interface and reduced cache give it significantly different memory specifications despite retaining the same core configuration.

AMD Radeon RX 9050 4GB Is an OEM-Only GPU

Finding the 4GB graphics card is also unusual because consumers cannot simply buy one from a retailer and install it themselves.

AMD previously confirmed that the Radeon RX 9050 4GB was developed specifically for a partner system aimed at delivering value to entry-level gaming customers. The company said there were no plans to sell the variant separately.

Hardware Unboxed and Toasty Bros instead obtained the GPU through CyberPowerPC prebuilt systems. The card was previously identified inside a CyberPowerPC Gamer Master desktop sold through Best Buy, which had been listed at $889.99.

XFX Version Found Inside CyberPowerPC Prebuilt

Toasty Bros also uncovered another detail after opening its CyberPowerPC machine: an XFX-branded Radeon RX 9050 4GB.

The dual-fan graphics card uses a single 8-pin power connector, suggesting ASRock is not the only AMD board partner to have produced the unusual OEM variant.

For prebuilt PC shoppers, checking whether a Radeon RX 9050 system contains the 4GB or 8GB version could therefore be important, as both carry the same basic product name despite the substantial difference shown in early testing.

The available benchmark evidence remains limited, however. With only a small number of outlets having independently tested the OEM-only card so far, additional results across different games, settings and PC configurations will provide a clearer picture of its overall gaming performance.
