Pittsburgh Penguins forward Ben Kindel was taken to hospital after suffering a medical episode aboard the team's plane shortly after take-off from Salt Lake City, forcing the aircraft to return to the airport.

The Penguins released an official statement explaining the emergency.

Penguins Await Further Information on Kindel's Condition

Kindel received immediate attention from team physician Dr Dharmesh Vyas and the medical staff travelling with the squad. An ambulance was waiting at Salt Lake City International Airport when the plane returned, allowing the forward to be taken to hospital.

The Penguins stressed that the health of their players and the privacy of their families remained their priorities. They said further updates would be provided when appropriate.

The emergency followed Pittsburgh's final game of a four-match road trip. Kindel played nearly 19 minutes against Utah, although there was no confirmation that the medical episode was related to an injury sustained during the contest.

As of 21 October, the team had not announced a diagnosis or confirmed when Kindel might return to action.

Pittsburgh were scheduled to face the Florida Panthers at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday, 22 October. His availability for the game remained uncertain pending further medical evaluation.

Who Is Ben Kindel? Penguins' Young Forward Shows Promise

Kindel was selected 11th overall by Pittsburgh in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft. Born on 19 April 2007 in Coquitlam, British Columbia, the centre entered the NHL as an 18-year-old and quickly became a promising part of the franchise's future.

During his rookie season in 2025-26, he recorded 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points in 77 regular-season appearances. His production was encouraging for a teenager adapting to the speed, physicality and demands of professional hockey.

Kindel's emergence also offered Pittsburgh another young offensive option as the organisation continued developing its next generation of players.

He had reportedly recorded two goals and two assists in nine games early in the 2026-27 campaign before the medical emergency. His progress had made him a player to watch as the Penguins pursued greater consistency.

The team's initial confirmation that Kindel was stable provided some reassurance, but his condition and recovery remain the immediate priority. With no diagnosis publicly disclosed, supporters must await further information before drawing conclusions about the incident or his playing future.
