Katarina Samutsevich, one of the three members of feminist punk rock band Pussy Riot, has been freed by the Moscow appeal court today.

Walking out to crowds of well-wishers, Samutsevich's sentence was suspended after her lawyer told the court that she did not participate in the anti-Putin "punk prayer" at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February. She was inside the church for just 15 seconds, before she was arrested.

Unfortunately her two band mates were unsuccessful in their appeal and the two year jail sentence handed out in August has been upheld. Their defence lawyer said they would be looking at launching further appeals. Speaking in Russian he said

"In regards to Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina we will be lodging further appeals. It will probably happen in the next few days. It will be an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights where we have a right to appeal after the court of second order, and in due course to a relevant panel here at Moscow City Court."

Questions are already being asked, why the court did not provide an answer, as to, why, they overturned the sentence for, Samutsevich but not, the evidence presented by her two band mates which was dismissed out of hand. The case is on-going.
