A 'family dispute' turned deadly at a Rhode Island ice arena on 16 February, resulting in three fatalities and three injuries after a gunman opened fire. The tragedy unfolded at the Dennis M Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, interrupting a hockey match between Blackstone Valley and Coventry schools as gunfire filled the building, WPRI.com reported.

Domestic Violence Leads to Murder-Suicide

An ATF official informed Fox News that the bloodshed was a domestic violence case that ended in a murder-suicide. The attacker reportedly killed his wife and opened fire on two of his children before taking his own life. The source added that his third child was also wounded and remains under hospital care.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves noted that the deceased included at least one woman and a male suspect, describing the event as a 'family row.' A second victim passed away from their wounds after being taken to the hospital. Authorities have not yet shared the names of those involved or the gunman, nor have they provided updates on the survivors' medical states.

Witnesses Describe Chaos as Students Reach Safety

A person working at a pharmacy close by described people rushing through the doors in a frenzy, saying gunfire had broken out. In a statement shared with Fox News Digital, Coventry Public Schools Superintendent Don Cowart clarified that every member of the Coventry Boys Hockey team at the rink has been located and is out of harm's way.

The school district was informed of the danger while the boys were at the arena, prompting immediate collaboration with event organisers and emergency services. Cowart noted that an 'officer from the Coventry Police Department is on scene and remains with the students.'

Following the incident, the FBI announced it is on the ground and available to assist local police as the investigation continues. Director Kash Patel posted an update to X, noting that the FBI Boston team is at the arena and will supply all required assets to local teams. He concluded by urging people to pray for the families affected while the bureau works to provide further updates.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee confirmed that his team is keeping a close watch on the situation. In a public statement, he shared that as a leader, a father, and a past coach, he is devastated for the families and students caught up in the Lynch Arena shooting. He also expressed his sincere thanks to the emergency crews, medical teams, transit drivers, and counsellors who acted with such courage.

The Providence Bruins, the local AHL partner of the Boston Bruins, issued a message regarding the violence.

The club said their hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragedy at the high school game in Pawtucket, adding that they stand with the community and appreciate the brave work of the emergency services on the scene.
