Selena Gomez Branded ‘So Botched’
Selena Gomez faced brutal online reactions at the 2026 Emmys as fans compared her appearance to Madonna and called her look 'botched' Instagram/selenagomez

Selena Gomez arrived at the 2026 Emmys in a shimmering gold Louis Vuitton gown, but instead of focusing solely on her fashion statement or Only Murders in the Building nomination, some viewers quickly turned their attention to her face.

Social media erupted with harsh comments about the 34-year-old star's appearance, with one viral post branding her 'so botched' and another comparing her to Madonna in her 60s.

The comments have since fuelled another round of online speculation about Gomez's appearance, despite there being no confirmation that she has undergone the cosmetic procedures being discussed.

Selena Gomez Made a Golden Emmys Entrance

Gomez stepped onto the Emmys red carpet in a strapless gold chainmail Louis Vuitton gown that hugged her figure before falling into a soft mermaid-style skirt.

The intricate design featured long pieces of chainmail arranged in a spiralling pattern around her waist, giving the look a sculpted effect as it flared towards the floor.

She paired the dramatic dress with Tiffany & Co. jewellery from the Bird on a Rock collection. The pieces combined 18-karat yellow gold with diamond-covered platinum, adding even more sparkle to an already eye-catching ensemble.

Her appearance marked a noticeable change from her 2025 Emmys look, when she wore a tomato-red column gown with a high neckline and flowing train.

Yet while the fashion details quickly attracted attention, Gomez's face became the bigger talking point online.

Fans Quickly Turned on Gomez's Appearance

A post from Pop Base showing Gomez arriving at the ceremony sparked a wave of commentary about her appearance.

One social media user wrote, 'Shes so botched wtf', a blunt reaction that quickly drew attention among commenters.

Another post went even further, saying, 'Looking like 60 years old Madonna in your early 30s is insane, that's why you shouldn't do fillers and botox kids.'

The comments appeared to assume that Gomez had undergone fillers or Botox, although the online speculation was not accompanied by confirmation from Gomez or her representatives.

That distinction did little to slow the conversation. Her red-carpet photographs quickly became the subject of appearance-focused posts, with users debating whether her features looked different from previous public appearances.

Madonna Comparison Added Fuel to the Backlash

The comparison to Madonna added another layer to the criticism, particularly because Gomez is in her 30s while Madonna has spent decades at the centre of intense public discussion about ageing and cosmetic procedures.

Rather than simply debating Gomez's gold gown, some commenters used the comparison to suggest that her appearance looked significantly older than expected.

The reaction reflects the intense scrutiny celebrities face whenever they appear on a major red carpet. Small changes in makeup, lighting, styling, facial expression and photography can quickly become the focus of online speculation, particularly when high-resolution images circulate across social media.

Gomez has also faced years of public commentary about her appearance, making the latest backlash part of a much larger conversation surrounding celebrity beauty standards.

The actress has recently been balancing her work on the show with an increasingly busy schedule. She spent part of the summer filming the sixth season in London, while her husband, music producer Benny Blanco, was not by her side at the Emmys.
