Seven men, accused of gang raping a 28-year-old woman in the central Indian city of Mumbai on Monday night, have been arrested on Tuesday, (1 November). She was allegedly raped by eight men, one of whom is still on the run.

The incident took place when the woman, along with her husband, was looking for a house in a slum area in Andheri West. The woman and her husband reportedly stayed back at a lady's house after house-hunting when eight men, from the same area, raped her.

In a statement, Mumbai police spokesperson Ashok Dudhe said all the suspects are between 20 and 25 years of age. "After the incident, the woman and her husband reached Amboli Police Station to lodge a complaint" he said. One of the eight accused has a criminal record, he added.

The victim's condition is said to be stable, Indian publication the Indian Express reported.

An officer from the police station said the accused will be produced in court on Tuesday afternoon. "We will be seeking their custodial interrogation to find out who hatched the conspiracy. We will also be checking CCTVs in the area and will seek technical assistance."

The police added that they have leads on the eighth accused and should be able to arrest him soon.
