Smurfs on crime spree

A bright blue "Smurf" asked a passerby for a cigarette and then beat up the man who obliged, police in Australia have said.

The attack on the 37-year-old man happened outside a convenience store in the town of Pascoe Vale in Victoria.

The attacker and his associates were coated in bright blue paint.

The fancy dress gang stopped the victim outside the shop, asked for a cigarette and when he passed it over they asked him to light it for them.

He refused and began to walk away when he saw three more men dressed as Smurfs trying to hotwire a car, police said. The gang then assaulted him.

A spokeswoman for Victoria Police said the victim was knocked out in the attack, which happened in December.
