Taylor Swift Reportedly Skips Emmys for Chiefs Suite as Travis Kelce and Kansas City Rout Denver on MNF

Taylor Swift was absent from Monday night's Emmy Awards as she watched husband Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs open their 2026 NFL season with a 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

Swift was seen in a private suite alongside actor Tom Cruise as Kelce began his 14th NFL season. Her appearance came on the same night as the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, where her concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour – The Final Show, had been nominated. The Emmys took place at the Peacock Theater on Sept. 14.

Swift's decision to attend the Chiefs game rather than the ceremony was widely framed as a choice between the two events, although it would be safer not to attribute a specific motive to her unless she addresses it herself. She was also represented at the Emmys through a pre-recorded segment with host Mariska Hargitay and the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit cast.

The appearance was Swift's first at a Chiefs game since she and Kelce married on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York. A representative for Swift confirmed the marriage to CBS News. Jason Kelce served as Travis Kelce's best man, while Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony. Jason later shared additional details about the wedding during ESPN's Monday Night Countdown.

Monday's game was also Kelce's first regular-season appearance since the wedding and Mahomes' first regular-season game since suffering a serious left-knee injury last December. Chiefs coach Andy Reid had said before the opener that Mahomes was likely to start provided he suffered no setback.

Chiefs Pull Away as Kenneth Walker III Stars

The game was competitive early, but Kansas City took control after halftime and finished with a comfortable 31-10 victory.

New Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III provided the biggest offensive spark. In his Kansas City debut, Walker rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns, including a 60-yard score in the third quarter. Mahomes completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while the Chiefs defense held Denver to 176 total yards.

Kelce also made NFL history during the game. His 59-yard reception moved him past Jason Witten into second place on the all-time receiving-yards list for tight ends. He finished the night with three catches for 71 yards.

What Travis Kelce's 14th Season Means for the Chiefs

At 36, Kelce is entering his 14th NFL season after deciding to return to Kansas City for another campaign. The Chiefs confirmed his return in March after he had considered retirement following the 2025 season.

Mahomes' return was arguably the more significant football storyline on Monday. After missing the end of last season with his knee injury, he was back under center for the season opener and helped Kansas City start the campaign with a convincing win.

Swift's presence nevertheless became one of the night's biggest off-field talking points. She was repeatedly shown during the broadcast, including while speaking with Cruise in the suite. Donna Kelce was also among those in the group, while reports identified Swift's father, Scott Swift, as another person present.

For Kansas City, however, the most important development was on the field: Mahomes returned, Walker immediately made an impact, Kelce reached another career milestone and the Chiefs opened the season 1-0.
