Tony Romo Explains Why He Referred to Taylor Swift as Travis Kelce's 'Wife' in Viral 2023 On-Air Moment
'I did that on purpose and people [were] like, "Do you know something...?"' Romo shared.

Long before the stadium lights dimmed on the 2023-24 NFL season, a single word uttered by Tony Romo ignited a firestorm of speculation after he referred to Taylor Swift as Travis Kelce's wife. In a recent interview, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback finally broke his silence on the slip-up that had 'Swifties' convinced he possessed inside information about the world's most famous couple.
It took two years for the NFL telecast analyst to explain the viral moment that sparked various speculations about Swift and Kelce's relationship. However, according to Romo, he was just messing with the audience and nothing more.
'I Did That on Purpose'
Romo appeared on SiriusXM's The Morning Mash Up on Thursday, 29 January. During the interview, he recounted the viral moments where he referred to Swift as Kelce's wife to 'play with the fans a little bit.'
'I think I was like, "And there's, I think I said, 'his wife." I did that on purpose and people [were] like, "Do you know something...?"' Romo said, per People. 'I was like, "Nah, I just wanted to make you guys think for a second."
Romo admitted that he just wanted to 'mess with you [audience and fans] a little bit.'
The Infamous Broadcast Slip-Ups That Sent the Internet Into Meltdown
Romo referred to Swift as Kelce's wife twice in 2023. The first instance occurred on 10 December 2023, during a tense matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.
As the camera panned to Swift, cheering and clapping her hands in her suite, Romo confidently said, "As you see, Kelce's wife, Taylor Swift, in the audience," before catching himself with a sheepish correction, saying, 'Oh, I'm sorry, girlfriend.'
His co-commentator, Jim Nantz, famously added a dry "Not yet," which only fueled the fire of online memes and conspiracy theories. Just one week later, during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Romo struck again and made the same reference to the 'Love Story' singer, prompting Nantz to joke that his partner had "been down that road before."

Romo's remarks immediately sparked a frenzy, with some fans speculating that he probably knew something that most didn't.
'Tony Romo accidentally calling Taylor Swift Travis Kelce's wife by accident is going to send swiftness into pure CHAOS,' one wrote on X (formerly Twitter) at the time. Another commented, 'I assure u, that was not an accident.'
Well, two years later, Romo admitted that he was just messing with the audience.
Engagement & Wedding Fears
While Romo was merely joking in 2023, he was right that Swift would eventually be Kelce's wife. In August 2025, Kelce and Swift announced their engagement.
The celebrity couple is set to wed in a lavish ceremony on 13 June 2026 in Rhode Island. A new report, however, suggests that the athlete is 'extremely stressed' that their wedding plans may be compromised due to Blake Lively's ongoing legal battle against Justin Baldoni.
Swift was very close to Lively and she could be summoned to appear in court. Unsealed text messages between the celebrity pals revealed that Lively asked Swift a favour to deal with a 'doofus' and 'clown' director. In their exchange, Swift also called Baldoni a 'b***h' with a 'tiny violin.'
Since the trial is expected to run through May and June, there are growing fears that the wedding date may need to be moved to accommodate the legal schedule.
'The possibility of having to cancel or reschedule plans because of a court appearance would be a massive disappointment in his eyes,' an insider toldThe Sun about Kelce's feelings about the matter.
Swift has since distanced herself from Lively. The pair was last seen together in public at the 2024 Super Bowl.
