Monday morning, X was on fire with it. Turning Point USA is done. Dead in the water. Donors fleeing, emails leaking, the whole ship going down. One account — Project Constitution, which is worth about as much as it sounds — posted a thread calling it all a fraud. 'The Charlie Kirk legacy has been hijacked by greed,' they wrote. 'Turning Point is cooked.'

Strong words. Thin evidence.

What People Are Saying

The claims have rattled around Reddit and X for weeks. Purported internal emails. Donors supposedly using phrases like 'demonic cult'. Allegations that TPUSA missed its fundraising goal on 31 December. Some posts mention dodgy IRS filings. Others vaguely gesture at corruption without naming specifics, which tells you something.

Owens poured petrol on it in December. 'I am making a personal plea to every well-meaning person who donated to this Godforsaken organisation to request a refund,' she told her audience. Some small-dollar donors apparently did.

Nobody has produced a verified internal document. The emails online have not been authenticated by any newsroom. That does not mean they are fake. It means nobody has proved they are real, and there is a gap between those two things.

What the Government Actually Confirmed

Erika Kirk, Charlie's widow and current CEO, asked the Treasury Department to settle it. Their reply landed in early December and CBS News got hold of it.

Pretty clear stuff. None of TPUSA's four entities — the main nonprofit, plus Turning Point Action, Turning Point Endowment, and America's Turning Point — are under IRS examination. Not one. All 2024 Form 990 returns filed on time.

A senior Treasury official was blunt about the whole circus: 'It's hideous that malicious lies and smears obligated her to make the request.'

Blake Neff from The Charlie Kirk Show backed it up. Charlie, he insisted, reviewed every expense personally. 'Down to a single United States dollar. We have never missed a 990 deadline.' You can take that at face value or not. But nobody has turned up a missed filing to contradict him.

Follow the Money, Then

Right, so what do the actual numbers say?

ProPublica pulled apart the 2024 Form 990. Revenue: $85m. Forbes found TPUSA raised roughly $389m between 2012 and mid-2023. From $78,000 in year one to tens of millions annually, no year on record dipping sharply enough to suggest collapse.

December's gala at Mar-a-Lago was 'maxed out' both nights.

Now, does any of that prove the organisation is clean? No. ProPublica flagged in 2020 that TPUSA had made 'misleading financial claims' and that its audits were not conducted by independent auditors. That is an old finding but it has not been addressed convincingly. Compliance and transparency are not the same animal.

Where All This Anger Comes From

Peel the X drama back and what sits underneath is something messier and more personal. Owens and Erika Kirk have been at war since Charlie was assassinated in September. Leaked Zoom audio. Accusations about the memorial. Conspiracy theories about donor influence over editorial calls. A $2m donor pulling out over the Tucker Carlson row — that bit is actually documented, confirmed by TPUSA's own spokesman and traced by Harper's to billionaire Robert Shillman.

TPUSA fights every allegation. The Treasury letter, the 990s, the packed gala — all deployed as proof that things are fine.

Whether things stay fine is the bit nobody can promise. The FEC fined Turning Point Action $18,000 in 2024 for dodging donor disclosure rules. Small potatoes on its own. But it is a real enforcement action, which makes it more credible than anything currently doing the rounds on Reddit.

For now the books say solvent. The internet says sinking. One of those claims comes with receipts. The other, so far, does not.
