Twin brothers have died in a tragic drowning accident involving a deep fishing pond at their home in Dalgety Bay, Fife. The two-year-old boys, called Rhys and Shaun, were taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy in the early hours of Saturday, 12 March, however medical staff were unable to save them.

According to Police Scotland the parents of the twins, Mervyn Scott (30) and Sarah Aitken (32), first raised the alarm early in the morning and 999 ambulance crews and police quickly rushed to the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received a call around 8.20am on Saturday following a report of concern for two children at an address in Dalgety Bay, Fife. Two male twins, aged two, had reportedly drowned in a fish pond and officers attended with the Scottish Ambulance Service.

"The children were taken to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy where they sadly died. Officers are supporting the family at this time. Inquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing."

According to the Daily Record, the previous resident of the house, called Keith Henderson, ran a firm called Okayama Koi Ltd from the property which sold the sought-after species of fish found in the large pond. A police cordon was quickly set up following the incident and a single floral tribute was placed on the parents' driveway to pay tribute in the wake of the tragic incident.

Colin McPhail, of Dalgety Bay Community Council, said: "We're all in shock over this tragic news. "Sarah has lived in this area all her life. She's a lovely lady and our hearts go out to her and her family at this awful time. All we've heard at the moment is that the two boys appear to have drowned. It's a shocking thing to have happened and, of course, there will need to be an inquiry. I'm sure members of the community will do what they can to support the family at this awful time."

Meanwhile, Mid Scotland and Fife Labour MSP Alex Rowley added: "This is awful news and is every parent's worst nightmare. The loss of two young lives from the same family is just heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers and those of the whole community, are with the family."
