The internet is divided over the fatal tiger attack at Yorkshire Wildlife Park: some blame the individual who entered the enclosure, while others have criticised the online reaction to the victim. The man, who has not been publicly identified, died after being attacked by a tiger.

After footage of the fatal attack described as 'distressing' by police went viral, some people claimed that the victim was 'clearly disabled.' One person wrote on X: 'The guy was special needs and deaf. He was with his carer; the comments I'm reading about him are utterly disgusting and disrespectful.'

'Disgusting' Comments

The user was referring to comments blaming the man for entering the enclosure. One person wrote: 'This idiot at Yorkshire Wildlife Park who jumped in with the Tiger must be mentally unstable and had a death wish. It's really good the Tiger is ok as it wasn't the tiger's fault.'

Another wrote: 'The retard who entered the enclosure earlier at the Yorkshire zoo has succumbed to his injuries and died... The tiger is still in its enclosure and thankfully was unharmed. This was no fault of the tiger, and as such, should be left to live its life out.'

Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed in a statement that the tiger involved would not be euthanised. 'Many, many people have contacted us about Altai, the tiger. We can reassure everyone that he is safe and well and will not be euthanised as a result of this incident,' the park said.

Was the Victim 'Disabled'?

Many social media users have claimed that the man who entered the enclosure had a disability or was mentally unwell. However, there has been no official confirmation of these claims. A community note on X also stated that the man's identity and disability status had not been confirmed by police.

'The man who died after entering the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has not been publicly identified by police, and there is no official confirmation he was disabled. All reports of autism or disability are based on unverified eyewitness accounts only,' the community note reads.

Was He Using Makaton?

Some people claiming the man had a disability pointed to what they interpreted as signs in the footage. One social media user wrote: 'He's using Makaton signs in the video, i.e., sticking his pinky up, which means "bad." It's a language used to help people with learning or mental disabilities. Shame on any cunt mocking the boy.'

'Makaton is a unique communication programme that uses symbols (pictures), signs (gestures) and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression,' Makaton describes the programme on its website.

However, it has not been verified that the man was using Makaton, and a hand gesture alone cannot establish that someone has a disability.

Park Closure

Meanwhile, the park announced that it would temporarily close to allow staff to recover from the incident.

'Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies remain with the family and loved ones of the man who sadly lost his life. The park will be closed today while the staff team who were deeply affected by events receive specialised support,' the park said.
