A Texan man's attempt to beat Ellen Degeneres' record for her Oscars star-studded selfie that "broke Twitter" on the night of the awards has gone viral.

Terry Shipman, from Beaumont Texas, took a selfie of himself at his home with his two dogs on the sofa.

In the caption of the picture, he wrote: "Let's see if we can beat the Oscar re-tweets!"

Shipman has Tweeted just six times in total, is following just seven people, and had 20 followers at the time of posting.

Just nine hours after he posted the photo, it was retweeted over 32,000 times and been favourite by almost 10,000 people.

Shipman has gained hundreds of followers and masses of support since posting the photo of him and his dogs, with many tweeting messages of congratulations on his picture.

Degeneres' selfie at the Oscars was retweeted over 3.2 million times, so Shipman still has some way to go to beat her record.

Many people dubbed her picture the best selfie ever. However, others were more cynical, noting that she had been sponsored to use the Samsung device and had used her iPhone for the rest of the evening.
