A viral video appears to show Los Angeles police officers repeatedly striking an unarmed, non-resisting protester on the ground during a demonstration against ICE in Downtown LA, prompting widespread outrage and debate over police conduct.

Footage circulating online claims to depict LAPD officers assaulting a protester with their batons while the man, with hands raised, makes no attempt to resist.

'To serve and protect?'

The incident occurred on January 31, Saturday, during a protest outside the Metropolitan Detention Centre, where demonstrators gathered to oppose immigration enforcement policies.

The video has ignited online discussions, with critics condemning police brutality and questioning the officers' use of force. Some viewers, including supporters of ICE policies, have questioned the authenticity of the footage, leading to a divide in public perception.

'Excessive force is obvious here. His hands are outstretched waiting for them to be handcuffed and instead the officer continues to use his baton repeatedly and unnecessarily,' an X user replied to the video.

'Typical LAPD, just like when they beat Rodney King, repeatedly striking a defenseless protester who is restrained on the ground. Police get off on hitting protesters when they are in no danger themselves,' another commented.

'I count the cop delivering at least FOUR hard thrusting blows with his side-handle baton (aka "tonfa:) directly to the small of the protestor's back (kidney area) WHILE the protestor is lying flat on his belly with both hands in the air above his head. The cop is TRYING to cause permanent damage to the protestor's kidney. There is no possible legal justification for this level of police brutality,' someone from a Reddit thread replied.

Meanwhile, other individuals questioned how the video was made. 'They don't look real,' they commented.

'Just comply with police. Why is that so hard for leftists to comprehend?' asked another.

'They are communist democrats having temper tantrums. Trump clean them out.'

Large-scale arrests follow protest violence

In the hours after Saturday's protest, authorities reported the arrest of approximately 50 individuals. Most arrests were for failing to disperse, but some involved charges of assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism.

Tensions escalated when agitators reportedly threw fireworks, rocks, and bottles at police officers, prompting a police response that included dispersal orders and the use of pepper spray.

Air7 footage captured fireworks exploding near the scene, and a police pursuit ending in a crash was linked to the unrest.

The LAPD confirmed that several streets were temporarily closed as officers managed the situation.

Clashes erupt at Federal Detention Centre

The demonstration, part of a nationwide effort to oppose funding for ICE, saw protests turn confrontational at the Metropolitan Detention Center. A group of protesters approached federal officers, who responded by deploying pepper balls and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Witnesses described projectiles being thrown toward the building, while police inside the detention centre appeared to spray pepper spray at protesters from behind barricades made of wooden skids.

The LAPD issued a citywide tactical alert, citing 'violent agitators' and declaring an unlawful assembly. At least one suspect was reportedly seen using a slingshot to hurl metal objects at officers.

'Federal Authorities will also be seeking charges for the crimes that occurred on Federal Property,' the LAPD Central Division posted on X. 'Investigations are ongoing into those who were not arrested over the last two days and charges are to follow,' they added.

Metro officials also reported the blocking of buses, disrupting transport services during the unrest.

LA Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged the arrests and maintained that no significant damage or injuries had been reported. She emphasised the importance of peaceful protests, highlighting that vandalism undermines the cause.

The mayor also noted the strain on police resources amid ongoing protests, citing staffing and overtime challenges faced by the department.

Bass suggested that recent protests may have been influenced by the detention of a journalist, though no official details were provided.
