A US pensioner woke up in a body bag after being left for dead by the authorities.

Walter Williams, 78, from Mississippi, has been described as a 'miracle', after he was pronounced dead by a coroner at his home on Wednesday night.

But as the funeral home workers were preparing to embalm him he woke up kicking inside the body bag.

It is believed his pacemaker may have stopped working then started up again.

His nephew, Eddie Hester, told WAPT News: "I stood there and watched them put him in a body bag and zipped it up."

Funeral home manager Byron Porter said: "He was not dead, long story short." He added that this was the first time he had ever seen anything like it.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie said: "I asked the coroner what happened, and the only thing he could say is that it's a miracle."

Paramedics rushed Williams him to a hospital where relieved family members said on Thursday night that he's happy to be alive.

"I don't know how long he's going to be here, but I know he's back right now," Hester added.
