Trey Reed, 21, was found hanging at Delta State University. Police suspect no foul play, but public backlash continues growing.

The death of Trey Reed, a 21-year-old Black student activist at Delta University, has sparked nationwide outrage after he was found hanging from a tree near the campus's central quad. Although authorities have not confirmed any political links, reports that the alleged suspect had ties to MAGA circles and expressed support for Charlie Kirk have intensified anger within Black communities.

'The lynching of Trey Reed at Delta University has become a chilling flashpoint in America's spiralling racial and political divide,' said YouTuber DONAT, as civil rights leaders denounce the killing as a modern-day lynching and warn it could mark a dangerous turning point in the struggle against racial violence.

Racially Motivated Crime?

The suspect, according to DONAT, is said to have shared pro-MAGA and anti-diversity views in a number of online forums. Although it wasn't clear who the YouTuber was referring to, he mentioned in a video that there are screenshots circulating on social media that show him praising Charlie Kirk's rhetoric and railing against so-called 'woke' initiatives on university campuses. In one post, he allegedly described diversity programmes as 'poisoning education' and echoed right-wing slogans commonly associated with American extremist groups.

According to fellow students, the suspect was known for his inflammatory remarks during debates on campus and was often seen distributing flyers criticising multiculturalism. Several said they had previously reported his behaviour to university administrators but claimed little action was taken. These revelations have fuelled anger among Reed's supporters, who argue that the warning signs were ignored until tragedy struck.

Investigators have remained tight-lipped about the progress of the case, but the political undertones surrounding the suspect's alleged affiliations have already placed it at the centre of America's culture wars.

Body Found Hanging In Campus

Per reports, the body of 21‑year‑old student Demartravion 'Trey' Reed was found hanging from a tree on Delta State University's central campus on Monday, 14 September 2025, causing a wave of controversial conversations despite a police declaration of no foul play.

Authorities and expert examiners have reported no broken limbs or signs of external trauma. However, netizens and social media users, some identifying themselves as family members, insist there are unanswered questions about his death and dispute the findings reported by police.

Discovery and Immediate Response

At about 7:05 a.m. on 14 September 2025, university staff located Reed's body hanging near the DSU pickleball course at the centre of campus in Cleveland, Mississippi. Delta State University's Director of Public Safety, Mike Peeler, confirmed the discovery and said university police were alerted. The university stated that Reed was a Black male student and expressed sorrow at the loss.

The university did not lock down the campus following the discovery, and officials stated that foul play was not suspected. Peeler told the community that the campus remains safe. However, all classes and events, notably the centenary celebrations, were cancelled until further notice.

Coroner's Findings and Investigation

Despite what is being discussed online, Bolivar County Deputy Coroner Murray Roark said he saw no broken limbs on Reed's body. He told the Mississippi Free Press that in his opinion the death appeared self‑done, but declined to elaborate beyond that. The body was recovered by the Bolivar County Coroner's Office, and additional investigation is underway.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, together with the Cleveland Police Department and the Bolivar County Sheriff's Office, are assisting the inquiry. President of Delta State University, Daniel Ennis, confirmed operations would resume as normal when feasible. He also extended condolences to Reed's family and those affected by his death.

Family and Netizens' Response

Soon after the discovery, a disturbing video showing Reed's body allegedly began circulating on social media. Reed's mother requested privacy and asked that the graphic video not be shared. Nevertheless, public concern grew as users speculated about cause and responsibility.

A user on TikTok, claiming to be Reed's cousin, alleged that Reed had been beaten and bruised, and that both his arms were broken and his leg was fractured. These claims contradict the coroner's report of no broken limbs. The cousin also referred to the history of Delta State University, founded in 1924 as a predominantly white public university, alleging a record of violence against Black students.

Netizens on YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit have been in uproar over the situation, alleging that 'No foul play...my grits. That young man didn't hang himself.' 'This was definitely a lynching. They ALWAYS rule out foul play. What a joke these people are!'

Some are questioning the claims of campus safety and wondering if the facilities truly maintain a level of security, asking, 'So the campus doesn't have cameras?'

Campus Atmosphere and Community Measures

Delta State University cancelled all events tied to its 100th anniversary that day, including the opening ceremony. The university's president has asked for compassion and patience as the investigation continues. A prayer service for Reed is being organised, and the Lena Sillers Chapel has been opened for those wishing to pray.

Officials have emphasised their intention to share updates when appropriate. Support services have been made available to students and staff. Meanwhile, law enforcement has cautioned against spreading unverified rumours.
