Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, a sequel to the 2004 cult comedy film, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, is all set for release.

Almost a decade has passed since Ron Burgundy and the Channel Four News crew were seen swinging their supersized egos across a San Diego studio room floor. Anchorman, a sleeper hit, became a cult favourite, to the extent that star Will Ferrell admitted he was seldom asked about anything else, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Anchorman was termed a huge hit, not only in DVD sales and as a cable TV staple, but also from the number of quotes that have made it into the pop culture lexicon ("Stay classy, San Diego!"), according to a report in the NY Daily News.

Ferrell and director Adam McKay had reportedly been toying with the idea of making a sequel to their 2004 hit for a long while since. However, various studio related technicalities kept getting in the way. The sequel eventually got under way and filming began in March 2013.

Anchorman 2 is set in 1980, when Ferrell's San Diego-based Ron Burgundy loses out on a national anchor position to his wife, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate). Harrison Ford makes a brief appearance in the sequel as the big boss who bumps Corningstone up into primetime, and dumps Burgundy altogether.

Burgundy rebounds with a job offer from a fledgling 24-hour news network. The job allows him to reunite with his previous news team, sex-crazed correspondent Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), perpetually offensive sportscaster Champ Kind (David Koechner) and dim weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell). What follows is how the reunited news team hits big time in New York.

Filming locations included the St Simons Island, Georgia and Atlanta (substituting for New York City). Some shots were taken at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Anchorman 2 is scheduled to be released on 18 December.
