British number one Andy Murray has been seeded sixth for the Australian Open.

The seedings for the first grand slam of the season mirror the current world rankings with world number one Novak Djokovic the top seed.

Murray, a three time finalist who reached the quarter finals in Melbourne in 2014, will discover his first round opponent on Friday (16 January) when the draw is made ahead of the start of competition on Monday.

Defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka is seeded fourth behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 2008 winner, is ruled out with an arm injury, as is US Open champion Marin Cilic who is struggling with a shoulder problem.

Serena Williams has been installed as the top seed in the women's singles ahead of Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
