Shares in British Airways were up on the FTSE 100 after the group reported a rise in passenger numbers in September.

Total passenger numbers in September reached three million, up 4.3 per cent from the same month last year.

In the six months to September however passenger numbers were down 7.4 per cent from the previous year to 16.4 million.

Passenger load factor, which measures the percentage of seats booked to those available, was up 0.9 per cent in September to 82.4 per cent.

In the six months to September load factor was down 1.4 per cent to 79.3 per cent.

By 15:50 shares in British Airways were up 6.40 per cent on the FTSE 100 to 254.40 pence per share.
