A Canadian military ship seized more than 280 kilograms of heroin on Friday (January 17) during routine patrols in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania.

The estimated street value of the seizure is £296 million.

The ship, the MCS Toronto intercepted 265 bags of heroin 40 nautical miles off the Tanzanian coast. The Canadian military reports that the illicit drugs were catalogued and disposed of at sea.

This seizure marks MCS Toronto's ninth drug seizure, with a total of 8.5 metric tonnes of narcotics intercepted, as part of the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean to curb illegal activity at sea.

No details of the ship that was caught carrying the drugs was provided.
