Lewis Hamilton along with both the Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen failed to set a timed lap during the Friday practice sessions – not because of problems with the car – but the poor weather conditions affecting the Shanghai International circuit.

There was minimal running in Free Practice one (FP1) due to the wet conditions before the session was stopped as the medical helicopter could not operate. Max Verstappen was the fastest in FP1 but managed just four laps with no driver reaching double figures.

The second practice session (FP2) was delayed again due to the medical helicopter being unable to operate which ultimately resulted in the session being cancelled with 15 minutes to go. The medical helicopter was able to take off from the track, but was unable to make the landing at the FIA designated hospital 38 km away from the track.

There was absolutely no running in FP2 which will be a major setback to the drivers and teams in terms of finding the best setup as similar wet conditions are expected for the race on Sunday. The weather forecast predicts it will be dry on Saturday during the third free practice session and qualifying, but it is unlikely to aid teams find the optimal setup for the race.
