Following the death of her son, Presley Gerber, Crawford's remarks about losing a child have resurfaced.

Crawford, now 60, previously reflected on the subject in a 2010 interview with the Mirror, recalling how her mother, Jennifer Sue Crawford-Moluf, remained composed despite enduring the death of her four-year-old son Jeffrey from leukaemia.

Jeffrey died two years after being diagnosed with the blood cancer, an experience that Crawford said brought her and her mother closer.

'She had a son that died. My dad [John Crawford] had an affair and they divorced. Those were painful things for her but they didn't take away from her light as a person,' Crawford said.

Crawford went on to explain how becoming a mother herself had changed her understanding of what her own mother endured. 'Now I'm a mom myself, I've really come to appreciate her outlook on life. I can't imagine the pain of losing a child,' she added.

Another source told PEOPLE that Crawford was 'heartbroken' following her son's death. The mother of two was reportedly 'shocked' after learning of her son's 'devastating' passing.

A second source told PEOPLE that Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, were very involved with their children's lives. They were also very supportive of Presley.

Santa Monica police are investigating the death as a suspected overdose, while emergency dispatch audio referenced a cardiac arrest and possible overdose. However, those details do not establish an official medical cause, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Presley was the only son of Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber and the older brother of model and actress Kaia Gerber. He followed his mother and sister into modelling, signing with IMG Models as a teenager and later working with fashion brands.

As the family mourns, Crawford's earlier reflection on her own mother's experience has drawn renewed attention because of the profound loss she is now facing herself.
