'Could That Get Any More Awkward?': Donald Trump Hands Elon Musk an Award With Zero Eye Contact
A fleeting moment on stage sparked questions, even as the president's own words conveyed a very different message

US President Donald Trump called Elon Musk a 'national treasure' before presenting him with the National Medal of Science in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, 8 October 2026.
Despite the praise, footage of their brief onstage exchange prompted social media users to question whether the two appeared uncomfortable together.
The presentation took place at the US Institute of Peace during the Science: A New Golden Age summit. Musk was among six technology executives honoured for their contributions to American science and innovation.
The reaction also followed Trump's public falling-out with Musk in 2025, when the billionaire criticised a major spending bill backed by the president. However, the latest footage offers no evidence that their previous disagreements have resurfaced.
Donald Trump and Elon Musk's Medal Exchange Draws Awkward Reactions
While the ceremony celebrated technological achievements, some viewers appeared more interested in the interaction between Trump and Musk.
On Reddit, one commenter questioned the absence of a handshake, writing, 'Notice how with Musk, they didn't shake hands.'
Another user remarked, 'How about that moment POTUS and Elon don't shake hands. Sooooo awkward!😬'
The observations prompted questions about the pair's relationship, particularly given their previous political disagreements. However, neither comment establishes that Trump or Musk deliberately avoided acknowledging the other.
Not everyone interpreted the ceremony negatively. A separate Reddit user congratulated the recipients, writing, 'A special congrats to Elon Musk and his co-medal recipients.'
Other users questioned the decision to recognise technology executives with prestigious scientific honours. Some argued that researchers and engineers deserved greater recognition for their contributions.
The differing reactions reflected how attention shifted between the recipients' achievements and the personalities involved. For viewers familiar with Trump's history with Musk, even a brief interaction became a subject of scrutiny.
Yet the speculation contrasted with the president's own remarks, which included unusually enthusiastic praise for Musk's achievements.
Donald Trump's 'National Treasure' Praise Contrasts With Online Speculation
Speaking during the ceremony, Trump celebrated Musk's contributions to space exploration and American technological development.
'We're proud of you, very proud of you, national treasure,' Trump said, according to a transcript of his remarks.
He also compared Musk to inventor Thomas Edison, praising his work through SpaceX, Tesla and the Starlink satellite network.
'Elon is our modern day Thomas Edison,' Trump declared, describing the businessman as a friend during his address.
The public praise marked a contrast with their confrontation in 2025. Musk had criticised Trump's domestic spending legislation following his departure from a government advisory role, exposing tensions between the former allies.
Nevertheless, the president's latest remarks were complimentary rather than confrontational.
According to the White House's official announcement, Musk received the National Medal of Science for engineering achievements spanning space exploration, intelligent systems and communications.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and AMD chief executive Lisa Su received the same honour.
Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella and Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell received the separate National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
The event also formed part of the administration's broader science agenda. In an official fact sheet, the White House announced $2.4 billion in artificial intelligence tools and computing credits from 11 industry partners.

The commitments were intended to support scientific research through the Genesis Mission, an initiative involving multiple federal agencies.
Trump also used his address to celebrate American technological leadership.
'We live in an age of American wonders and technological marvels,' the president said, highlighting the industry's role in advancing scientific discovery.
The awards ceremony therefore offered more than the fleeting encounter circulating online. It also provided a public demonstration of Trump's appreciation for Musk's work, despite their earlier political differences.
Whether their relationship has fully recovered remains unclear. While viewers interpreted the brief exchange differently, Trump's public remarks were unmistakably positive, and neither man has provided an explanation suggesting the presentation reflected renewed tensions.
