'This Is Not Good': Donald Trump Declares 'Now I'm Depressed' After Close-up Shows His Bald Spot
Trump's thinning hair prompted a joke at his Texas rally before Marie Vega offered an unexpected compliment and spoke about her son

Donald Trump paused a high-profile campaign address in San Antonio, Texas, on 7 October 2026, to poke fun at his thinning hair after catching an unscripted glimpse of the back of his head on a stadium screen.
'Now I'm depressed,' the US president told supporters, before a guest later assured him he was 'still handsome.'
As Trump campaigned at Freeman Coliseum for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate candidate facing Democrat James Talarico. With the November midterm elections approaching, the visit was intended to bolster Paxton in a competitive contest.
Trump had just played footage about immigration when he spotted an image of himself from behind on a venue screen. He stopped his speech and turned an awkward camera angle into an exchange with supporters.
'Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I'm not happy right now,' Trump said, according to a transcript of the rally. 'Getting a little bit thin up there. I'm not happy. This is not good news. Now I'm depressed.'
He explained that he had thought he looked 'really sharp tonight' until the screen showed the back of his head. 'This is not good,' he added, then asked twice, 'Why didn't you tell me?'
He made the 'depressed' remark as part of a joke about his appearance. There was no indication that Trump was disclosing a mental health condition. After the interruption, he returned to his argument about immigration and the election.
Marie Vega Reassures Trump Before Recalling Her Son's Death
The joke resurfaced when Trump invited Marie Vega to the stage a few minutes later. The president had asked her to speak about her son, Javier 'Harvey' Vega Jr., rather than comment on his hair. Vega nevertheless began by acknowledging the remark.
'If I were you, I wouldn't worry about your thinning hair, you're still handsome,' Vega told him. She then welcomed Trump to Texas and thanked him for giving a platform to families affected by violent crime.
Her son was a serving US Border Patrol agent and Marine Corps veteran. He was shot dead on 3 August 2014 while fishing with family members near Santa Monica, Texas. He was 36. The attack also wounded his father.
Although Vega was off duty at the time, his death was formally reclassified as occurring in the line of duty on 20 September 2016. The Border Patrol Foundation said investigators determined that his response reflected his law enforcement training and an attempt to protect others.
Speaking at the rally, Marie Vega described her family's ordeal and urged tighter enforcement of immigration laws. She called on Texans to vote Republican. Her appeal shifted the event's tone from Trump's unscripted self-mockery to a bereaved mother's campaign message.
Donald Trump Has Joked About His Bald Spot Before
Trump has long challenged speculation about his distinctive hairstyle. During a rally in Greenville, South Carolina, in August 2015, he brought a woman onstage to touch his hair after denying that he wore a toupee. 'It's my hair, I swear,' he told the audience.
At the Conservative Political Action Conference in February 2018, he made another joke after seeing himself on a screen. 'I try like hell to hide that bald spot, folks,' he said. 'I work hard at it.' The exchange resembled his latest onstage reaction.
He addressed the subject again at a Rose Garden dinner for Republican lawmakers on 2 September 2026. Recalling a campaign speech disrupted by high winds, he said the weather would have exposed any hairpiece. 'I don't wear a wig,' he insisted.
Those previous remarks help explain why the subject was familiar territory for the president. His latest comments said nothing about the cause of his thinning hair or how he styles it. They showed he had noticed his appearance on screen and chose to joke about it.
Vega then moved from her compliment to her prepared remarks about border enforcement. She urged Texans to back Republican candidates in November, returning attention to the political purpose of Trump's visit and the immigration message at the centre of the rally.
