Cristiano Ronaldo Quits Portugal National Team Camp, Says He'll Reveal Reasons 'In Due Time'
Portugal captain quits camp before Nations League match with Denmark and says he will explain why later

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal's national team camp just one day before the side's UEFA Nations League meeting with Denmark, saying he will eventually reveal the reasons behind his decision.
The 41-year-old captain announced his departure on Wednesday, September 30, after Portugal manager Jorge Jesus held a press conference and Ronaldo spoke with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. Ronaldo said he would tell the Portuguese public the 'truth' about what led to his exit, but did not specify whether he had ended his international career.
The decision follows several days of uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo's role under Jesus. He was an unused substitute during Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday and subsequently trained separately from the squad. Jesus had denied there was a serious dispute. Ronaldo's departure came shortly after Jesus had denied a serious dispute as Portugal prepares for another Nations League match.
Ronaldo Says More Details Will Come Later
Ronaldo announced his decision through social media, saying it followed the national team manager's press conference and his conversation with Proença.
'In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always been fully committed,' Ronaldo said.
He then wished Portugal and his teammates good luck.
The statement did not say that Ronaldo had retired from international football. It also did not identify a specific disagreement, meaning the precise reason for his departure remains unconfirmed.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that Ronaldo had left the camp and said preparations for the upcoming fixtures would continue with the remaining players.
Tension Followed Ronaldo's Bench Role Against Norway
The immediate background to the controversy was Portugal's 2-1 win over Norway in Oslo.
Ronaldo started Portugal's opening Nations League match against Wales three days earlier but Jesus left him on the bench for the entire game against Norway. It was the first time in more than 18 years that Ronaldo had been left on the bench for an entire competitive match when fit, particularly because the veteran forward had been expected to remain an important figure under Jesus.
Jesus later explained that he had initially considered using Ronaldo but ultimately decided against bringing him on. He said the decision was connected to the short turnaround between matches, noting that Portugal plays four games in 11 days.
Ronaldo had also spent part of the match warming up without entering the field. Jesus acknowledged that the situation had left the forward unhappy but said there had been no incident between them.
Portugal won the match through goals from João Félix and Gonçalo Ramos, with Erling Haaland scoring for Norway.
Jesus Denied Ronaldo Refused To Train
Questions intensified when Ronaldo did not take part in Portugal's full team training ahead of the Denmark match. The Portuguese federation said he had been carrying out individual gym work. Reports then focused on whether the absence reflected a disagreement with Jesus.
At his Wednesday press conference, Jesus rejected suggestions that Ronaldo had refused to train and said he expected him to participate.
'He didn't refuse. He's going to train today,' Jesus said.
Jesus also insisted that selection decisions belonged to the coach and that the same rules applied to every player.
However, Ronaldo left the camp shortly after the press conference. Reuters reported that he departed the training venue in a Portuguese federation vehicle as the rest of the squad prepared for training.
Ronaldo's International Future Is Now Uncertain
Ronaldo's departure raises questions about whether he will continue playing for Portugal, although he has not announced his retirement. He remains the leading scorer in men's international football, with 146 goals for Portugal, and has repeatedly spoken about his ambition to reach 1,000 career goals.
Before the latest dispute, Ronaldo had also expressed a desire to help Portugal compete for another Nations League title.
The timing of his departure is particularly important because Portugal is beginning a new period under Jesus. The coach replaced Roberto Martínez following the 2026 World Cup and has already begun managing Ronaldo's minutes differently from previous Portugal managers.
Ronaldo has said that explanation will come 'in due time'. Until he provides it, claims about the exact cause of the departure remain speculation rather than established fact.
