Nancy Guthrie Disappearance: Dan Bongino Slams Pima County Sheriff for Ignoring FBI Technology
Authorities face scrutiny as the search for Nancy Guthrie continues amidst public and expert criticism.

With the continued national coverage of the mysterious disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the criticism against the actions of the local authorities in the investigation has grown.
In the Fox News Hannity programme, former deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino said Pima County Sheriff's stance made no sense, and it was deplorable that the sheriff is not fully using the FBI's technological potential in the investigation.
In his remarks, Bongino raised questions concerning the strategy used by law enforcement in one of the cases that have left the authorities dazed and left the population in uncertainty.
Background to the Investigation
The last time Savannah Guthrie, a cohost on the Today show, saw her mother was on 31 January 2026, at her home in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, Arizona, when she was last seen before being reported missing the following day due to her failure to attend a scheduled appointment.
The police were quick to conclude that it was not just another missing persons case, as one of the clues was the blood stains that were located on her front porch, after which DNA tests were later conducted, confirming they belonged to her and the broken surveillance cameras around the house.
The Sheriff Department of Pima County, along with the FBI, has been at the forefront of the search, and they are investigating the case that was highly publicised. In one of the few specific clues in an otherwise shrouded investigation, the FBI shared surveillance footage of a masked and armed person who broke into the doorbell camera of Guthrie sometime in the early hours of 1 February.
Although there was this development, investigators have not publicly identified or charged any suspect.
One individual has been briefly held in a traffic jam in relation to the investigation and has been released free of charge. The police have made a raid being approved by the court, in a house at Rio Rico, Arizona, in the south of Tucson, although it never yielded conclusive results.
Bongino's Critique on the Use of Technology
In his broadcast statements, Dan Bongino heavily criticised the workings of the investigation conducted by the local sheriff's office, claiming that it makes zero sense that anyone would not be using FBI technology to interrogate evidence and build leads.
His statements, which were broadcast on Hannity, were part of an overall discontent of commentators who say that more sophisticated federal activity can be used earlier or faster on high-profile cases like the one.
Even though Bongino did not indicate which specific technologies he was referring to with his criticism, the implication can be heard in the modern circles of law enforcement regarding how opportune the application of forensics and digital power can be, particularly when it comes to complex missing-person cases where every hour and bit of data can be vital.
Local Government Reacts to Tech Criticism
Suggestions that Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and his office have impeded the FBI involvement or have not utilised sophisticated tools have been resisted.
Authorities have insisted on the fact that the FBI was invited at an early stage and that all pertinent evidence has been exchanged and worked on together.
When the sheriff was accused of their department refusing FBI access to the major evidence, a spokesman of the sheriff's office said that the DNA and other evidence were given to a private lab in Florida in cooperation with the FBI, and not blocked by him/her, so that the evidence might be analysed uniformly.
Other, more speculative allegations, published by Sheriff Nanos himself, that police intentionally slowed or restricted the application of technology, have been labelled as so implausible that their truth appears remote, and the author has stressed the collaborative interaction between his department and the federal agency.
The sheriff reported that his deputies had been on the Guthrie residence processing a crime scene almost 20 hours prior to the arrival of the FBI staff.
Investigation Efforts and Ongoing Search
Although the tactics deployed are disputed, both local and federal authorities are still working hard in order to find Guthrie and resolve the case. As an extension of the current study:
Surveillance video was restored and released through the FBI channels, in which a masked man was captured at the place of residence of Guthrie the night she disappeared.
A ~£73,000 (US$100,000) reward will be given for information that would lead to the recovery of Guthrie or the conviction of any involved person.
Several ransom notes that were reportedly linked with the disappearance and referenced to cryptocurrency requirements also emerged initially in the investigation, yet their authenticity has been doubted by experts.
The government has gone beyond this by also making an uncharacteristic move and trying to use a tool referred to as a signal sniffer, capable of detecting Bluetooth Low Energy emanations of the pacemaker used by Guthrie. This is actually an innovative strategy, and shows just how complex the search is.
Public Appeals and Family Response
The family of Guthrie, especially Savannah Guthrie, is still seeking public assistance, providing them with surveillance images and asking anybody who knows anything to contact them.
In one of their social media posts that featured released footage, Savannah Guthrie stated that the family felt that her mother was still alive and requested tips, which could help her safely get back home.
In the meantime, the representatives of law enforcement agencies underline that although the case is a tough nut to crack and frustratingly vague, investigations remain active, and searches and forensic examinations are underway.
