Dakota Johnson Says She 'Doesn't Remember' Madame Web Two Years After Marvel Flop Became an Internet Punchline

Hollywood actress Dakota Johnson has found a brutally simple way to deal with questions about Madame Web two years after the superhero film became one of the most mocked entries in Sony's Spider-Man universe: apparently, she does not even remember it.

The 36-year-old actress reportedly delivered the deadpan response while promoting her new thriller Verity, reigniting the online fascination with her famously unpredictable Madame Web press appearances. Asked once again about the 2024 film, Johnson simply said she did not remember the movie.

The remark quickly drew amused reactions online, with fans treating it as the latest instalment in Johnson's long-running history of dry responses about the critically panned superhero film.

Dakota Johnson's 'Madame Web' Comments

Johnson's apparent indifference towards Madame Web became nearly as widely discussed as the film itself during its 2024 promotional campaign.

The actress repeatedly generated headlines with unusually candid answers about the Marvel-related project. She joked that she had seen only about '4%' of Marvel films and struggled to name one of Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies during an interview.

Johnson also previously joked about not watching her own films, while her seemingly detached approach to the Madame Web publicity tour spawned memes and viral clips.

However, not every headline surrounding Johnson's comments accurately reflected what she said. Some remarks were stripped of their original context, contributing to the perception that she had been openly disparaging the film while promoting it.

What Johnson Actually Said About 'Madame Web'

Away from the jokes, Johnson has spoken more seriously about why the superhero project did not work out as she expected.

In a March 2024 interview with Bustle, Johnson said she was 'not surprised' by the reaction to Madame Web, arguing that large studio productions can be shaped by committees and decisions that change a project substantially during development.

Johnson said the film became 'a completely different thing' from what she initially signed up for and described making it as a 'real learning experience.' She also acknowledged that being involved in a project that was 'ripped to shreds' was unpleasant.

The actress indicated that the experience had largely put her off similar blockbuster projects, saying she probably would not do anything like it again because she did not 'make sense in that world.'

How Badly Did 'Madame Web' Perform?

Madame Web opened in the US on 14 February 2024, with Johnson playing Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who develops clairvoyant abilities.

The film also starred Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott.

Its domestic opening reached just $15.3 million (£11.5 million), according to Box Office Mojo. The film ultimately earned $43.8 million (£33 million) domestically and about $100.5 million (£75.8 million) worldwide.

Sweeney later joined in the jokes surrounding the poorly received film, famously referencing it during her Saturday Night Live monologue in 2024.

Dakota Johnson Moves On With 'Verity'

Johnson has now shifted her attention to Verity, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestselling 2018 psychological thriller.

She stars as struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh opposite Anne Hathaway as successful author Verity Crawford and Josh Hartnett as Verity's husband, Jeremy.

Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity is scheduled to arrive in US cinemas on 2 October 2026. Johnson recently described filming the thriller as 'so fun,' while Hathaway praised her co-star's dry sense of humour.
