Former CIA Intelligence Officer Recreates Jeffrey Epstein's Prison Cell and Claims He 'Could Be Alive'
A reconstructed prison cell raises extraordinary questions, but official investigations tell a different story

Former CIA intelligence officer Andrew Bustamante has suggested Jeffrey Epstein might still be alive after a television investigation recreated his New York prison cell.
The unsupported theory has attracted renewed attention in October 2026, despite federal findings that Epstein died by suicide.
After Bustamante explored Epstein's death in the Discovery series Conspiracies & Coverups. Its fifth episode, 'Mysterious Death of Epstein,' was released on 29 April 2026 and featured a full-scale replica of his cell.
Epstein died at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan on 10 August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
The New York City medical examiner ruled his death a suicide, a finding subsequently supported by federal investigations.
Jeffrey Epstein Prison Cell Reconstruction Raises New Escape Theory
Bustamante worked with specialists to recreate the cell and examine competing explanations for Epstein's death. His investigation considered suicide, homicide and the possibility that the financier had secretly escaped custody.
Speaking on the EverydaySpy YouTube channel, Bustamante described finding 'too many inconsistencies, too many gaps, too many questions' surrounding the case.
He questioned whether the available evidence adequately explained what happened inside the prison, arguing that some details appeared more consistent with homicide.
'There are just too many inconsistencies on the side of, 'Oh, he killed himself,' and there are too many consistencies on the side that he was killed,' Bustamante said.
His investigation eventually led him to consider another possibility. After consulting contacts within his professional network, he began questioning whether Epstein's death could have been staged.
Bustamante speculated that someone might have substituted another body while Epstein was secretly removed from the facility.
He claimed that the reconstruction revealed a possible means of concealing Epstein before his departure, saying 'he may actually still be alive.'
However, Bustamante presented no independently verified evidence that Epstein escaped, that another body was substituted or that prison personnel participated in such an operation.
His theory instead centred on what he described as an unexplained discrepancy between the reconstructed cell and drawings he believed represented its official dimensions.
Jeffrey Epstein Escape Theory Centres on Alleged Hidden Space
Bustamante said his team used photographs to build the replica, then compared its dimensions with drawings he described as official prison schematics.
According to Bustamante, the comparison suggested Epstein's cell contained an additional wall section not shown on the drawings.
He alleged that the space included a vent leading beyond the cell wall, potentially providing access to another area.
'The Department of Prisons makes the cell out as if it is a perfect rectangle, but the actual cell isn't a rectangle,' he said. The federal agency responsible for the facility is the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Bustamante estimated that the alleged opening could connect to approximately 80 cubic feet of space. He further speculated that a stairwell beyond the wall might have provided an escape route.
Neither the alleged opening nor its accessibility has been independently established. The reconstruction also does not demonstrate that anyone could have travelled through such a space undetected.
Bustamante reportedly consulted a former inmate who recognised similarities between the replica and the prison's interior.
The former prisoner reportedly described the setting as feeling like 'home,' although he observed that the paint appeared brighter and the floor cleaner than he remembered. Those observations offered limited feedback about the replica's appearance. They did not establish its architectural accuracy or corroborate the alleged escape route.
Federal Investigations Challenge Jeffrey Epstein Survival Claims
Bustamante's theory faces substantial challenges from official investigations into Epstein's death. A June 2023 investigation by the US Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General documented serious failures at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.
Investigators found that prison employees failed to conduct required inmate checks and falsified records documenting rounds and counts. They also identified surveillance-system problems and failures to comply with instructions concerning Epstein's cellmate.
Epstein was left alone after his cellmate was transferred on 9 August 2019. Staff discovered him hanged in his locked cell the following morning.
Despite identifying serious misconduct, the inspector general found no evidence contradicting the FBI's determination that Epstein's death involved no criminal act.
The investigation also established that the prison's Special Housing Unit was secured by multiple locked doors. Individual cells could be accessed through a single locked entrance.
Investigators reviewed available surveillance footage covering the unit's common area and approaches to the housing tiers.
Although the camera did not capture Epstein's cell door, investigators reported seeing nobody enter his tier from the common area during the relevant overnight period.
The Justice Department and FBI reaffirmed the suicide finding in July 2025. Their memorandum stated that an independent review of surveillance footage showed nobody entering the unit's housing tiers between approximately 10.40pm on 9 August and 6.30am the following morning.
The federal findings do not independently resolve every architectural claim Bustamante made. Nevertheless, they provide substantial evidence against suggestions that Epstein was secretly removed from custody.
Bustamante himself acknowledged that his survival theory remained speculative. He mentioned hypothetical probabilities of 2% and 25%, but neither figure represented a calculated likelihood supported by verified evidence.
When asked whether the alleged discrepancies proved Epstein survived, Bustamante responded, 'Does that mean he's alive? No.'
His reconstruction highlights questions he believes remain unanswered about the prison's layout. It does not overturn the medical examiner's determination or the findings of subsequent federal investigations.
The official records establish serious failures in Epstein's supervision and detention. They do not establish that those failures enabled an escape, concealed a body substitution or prevented investigators from identifying the person who died in custody.
