Friday the 13th: The Game release date set for May on PS4, Xbox One and PC

Players will be able to take on the role of Jason Voorhees or that of one of the teenage counsellors.

Friday the 13th: The Game, the gore-filled, Kickstarter-funded survival-horror game by Gun Media, is set to launch on 26 May, the publisher announced on Friday (21 April). Developed by IllFonic, the hide-and-seek title was initially supposed to release in autumn last year, but was delayed to "early 2017" to add the "most-often requested features" including a single-player experience.

In response to fan queries on Twitter, the developer apologised for the game's delayed release.

"Ratings took a little longer than anticipated, our apologies. Luckily, we've been approved in some countries that might have banned the game," the development team wrote.

Based on the popular horror franchise, the 1v7 asymmetric online multiplayer will have players take on the role of Jason Voorhees himself or that of the teenage Camp Crystal Lake counsellors to stealthily hide or work together to escape the crazed, masked killer.

A new two-and-a-half minute trailer for the game (embedded below) shows off some of the game's various features in multiplayer including character customisation, various incarnations of Jason from the movies and a range of brutally gory kills. The footage also showcases different locations across the game's dark and creepy camp ground setting that players can explore as well.

Friday the 13th will feature three maps at launch — Camp Crystal Lake, Higgins Haven and Packanack Lodge.

While Friday the 13th will release as a multiplayer-only game at launch, the title's single-player mode will be added as a free update in the summer this year. The developer also noted that the game's digital version will release on 26 May for $40 (£31). Details on the game's physical version will be revealed "down the road".

The game initially started off as a Kickstarter project in 2015 garnering over $820,000 from more than 12,000 contributors.

When asked if the game will be supported on Microsoft's upcoming upgraded Xbox One console code-named Project Scorpio, the developer responded: "We shall see what happens." Regarding a possible Nintendo Switch port, the developer said: "Sorry, no plans at this time."
