GTA 6 will launch on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar Games has confirmed, with digital pre-orders able to start pre-loading the game at local midnight on 12 November.

The confirmation finally locks down the GTA 6 release date after years of shifting targets. The first trailer only offered a broad 2025 window. Rockstar later fixed 26 May 2026 as launch day before announcing a further delay and moving the game to 19 November 2026, saying the extra months were needed to deliver the expected level of polish.

The new date also puts GTA 6 in the same month as Nintendo's rebuilt The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is scheduled to land on Nintendo Switch 2 on 5 November.

Veteran Grand Theft Auto fans will recognise the pattern. Grand Theft Auto V was initially positioned as a spring 2013 release before it finally arrived on 17 September that year. Rockstar projects have a habit of slipping into autumn, and GTA 6 settling into a late-year slot again feels less like coincidence and more like the studio quietly acknowledging how it actually ships games.

GTA 6 Pre-Load, File Size and Platforms

Rockstar has tried to smooth the practical side of the GTA 6 launch, even if some details remain under wraps. Players who pre-order digitally on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S will be able to start pre-loading from local midnight on 12 November, giving them a week to pull down the files before the servers inevitably get hammered on release day. Anyone buying the boxed edition will find a download code inside rather than a disc, and those codes will also support pre-loading from 12 November once redeemed.

Rockstar has not yet confirmed the GTA 6 file size or required storage space. In the absence of hard numbers, estimates flying around social media range from big to frankly absurd. None of that is official. Until Rockstar publishes a specification, any claimed install size is exactly that, a claim.

On platforms, the message is currently very simple. GTA 6 is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. The PlayStation Store listing notes that the PS5 version is 'PS5 Pro Enhanced,' which is marketing speak rather than a separate version, but there is still no mention of a PC edition or any Nintendo hardware in Rockstar's own materials. The company has not announced a PC date, and Nintendo Switch 2 is also absent from the confirmed list, so both remain wish-list items rather than real products.

That leaves PC players and handheld diehards in familiar territory, watching from the sidelines while console owners get first crack. Whether that standoff lasts months or years is, as usual with Rockstar, information the studio is keeping to itself.

GTA 6 Price, Editions and What You Actually Get

The GTA 6 price was always going to touch a nerve. After other blockbuster games edged upwards, fans braced for Rockstar to test what players would really pay. The company has landed on two US price points, and neither is exactly small change.

The standard edition of GTA 6 is set at $79.99 (about €75 and £64). That price is the same whether you buy digitally or opt for the so-called physical edition, which is essentially a code in a box. There is no traditional disc, something that will irritate collectors and anyone who still enjoys the slightly old-school ritual of opening a case and slotting a game into the drive.

Above that is the $99.99 (€94 and £80) Ultimate Edition. Rather than just being a more expensive version with a fancy label, it folds in additional in-game content tied directly to Jason and Lucia's story, including premium vehicles, weapons, apparel and other perks. There are still no tangible extras in the box, a clear break from the GTA 5 collector's edition that bundled digital bonuses with physical goodies.

Crucially, Rockstar is not forcing anyone to make a $99.99 decision on day one. Players who buy the $79.99 standard edition can upgrade later by paying the $20 difference if they decide the Ultimate Edition add-ons are actually worth it. Pre-orders and purchases made before 20 November will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders also include one complimentary month of GTA+, Rockstar's subscription service for GTA Online.

The small print matters. The PlayStation Store warns that the free GTA+ period can roll into a paid subscription if it is not cancelled in time. Anyone who just wants the bonus month without an ongoing bill will need to keep an eye on renewal dates.

Even so, Rockstar is clearly betting that the scale of GTA 6 will justify the higher baseline price. GTA 5 has been pulling players back in for 13 years, powered by GTA Online and regular updates. The unspoken promise is that GTA 6 will be another one of those games you do not just finish, you live in.

GTA 6 Puts Jason and Lucia's Story Front and Centre

On the creative side, GTA 6 is being presented as a single-player experience built around two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Official material describes them being drawn into a sprawling criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida, a new setting that folds in a modernised Vice City and its surrounding region. Rockstar is already calling this its biggest and most immersive evolution of Grand Theft Auto, which, given the studio's track record, is not the kind of claim it makes lightly.

What Rockstar has not done is spell out how online play fits into that picture. There is no announcement of a GTA 6-based version of GTA Online, no roadmap for multiplayer modes and no timetable for when, or even if, that side of the series will plug into the new world. For now, the spotlight is firmly on the campaign.

The same caution applies to talk of GTA 6 microtransactions. Some corners of the internet have been quick to declare that the game will launch untouched by in-game purchases. That is not what the official listings say.

The PlayStation Store currently flags 'in-game purchases optional,' which is the standard label for a title that at least has the hooks for paid content. Until Rockstar details its post-launch plans, any sweeping claims about how GTA 6 will or will not be monetised are getting ahead of the facts.

What is clear is that fans are already combing every announcement for clues. Reddit threads and comment sections are full of people doing the maths on $79.99 versus $99.99, debating whether a code in a box counts as 'real' physical media and arguing over the value of the Ultimate Edition's story-linked upgrades compared to simply sticking with the base game.

Sony and Rockstar, meanwhile, are leaning into the spectacle with hardware. Two GTA 6-branded DualSense wireless controllers will launch on 19 November in black and white versions, each with a recommended US retail price of $84.99 (about €80 and £69). Sony says they feature a colour-shifting finish, moulded palm-tree details and official GTA 6 branding inspired by Vice City.

The White Limited Edition will be sold globally in limited quantities through PlayStation Direct and participating retailers, while the Black Limited Edition is exclusive to PlayStation Direct in supported countries, with select retailers filling the gaps elsewhere.

Pre-orders for the controllers opened on 10 September, and, as ever, availability will vary by region. Between those, the premium price tags and the carefully controlled information drip, Rockstar is making sure that, even with some big questions still unanswered, GTA 6 never really leaves the conversation.
