Prince Philip, frustrated with waiting to have his picture taken, was caught losing his cool with a photographer, telling them to "just take the f*****g picture!"

The rebuke came as the prince posed with veterans from the Battle of Britain. The reception with other royals, including Prince William, was to mark the 75th anniversary of the start of the historic event.

The Duke of Edinburgh looked around angrily before scolding the photographer and pointing at them.

Just prior to the official photographs the royal family, including the Queen, had watched an RAF flyover of four Spitfires, two Hurricanes and four Typhoon aircraft.

Philip is known to be the most gaffe-prone royal. On a state visit to China, he made a famously racist comment and once asked a Royal Navy cadet if she had ever worked as a stripper. In a similar incident to the RAF reception, at a party in 2004, a hungry Philip was heard to remark: "Bugger the table plan, give me my dinner!"
