A Christian preacher who says he encountered Jesus while in an 18-day coma has gone viral after answering a centuries-old question: what did Jesus look like?

Gabe Poirot, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 2021 electric skateboard crash, told Fox News that Jesus appeared to be around 5 ft 11 in, with burning white-and-red eyes and 'testosterone like a Mustang'. His claims have triggered jokes and debate online.

Gabe Poirot Says Jesus Was 5'11" With 'Burning' Eyes

Poirot's description comes from a March Fox News interview that resurfaced widely on social media recently. Asked directly what Jesus looked like during his alleged encounter, Poirot replied, 'Pure fire.'

'He was 5'11", like six feet, yet as tall as eternity,' he continued, describing him as an 'ocean of love' whose eyes were simultaneously 'burning white and red.'

Then came the line that turned the clip viral, 'Talk about testosterone, like a Mustang.'

Poirot also called Jesus the 'Lion of Judah' and said there was a 'roar within his voice.' He argued that Jesus had been misrepresented in American culture as soft, passive or simply tolerant, insisting the figure he remembers was distinctly masculine.

Fox News identifies Poirot as a survivor of a life-threatening skateboarding accident who says he met Jesus during his coma. His description remains a personal religious testimony and cannot independently establish the historical appearance of Jesus.

What Happened During Gabe Poirot's Coma?

According to his account, Poirot was 20 when he crashed an electric skateboard travelling at approximately 30 mph in Texas on 25 October 2021. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury.

He has said he spent three days in a natural coma followed by 15 days in a medically induced coma. Poirot claims that during this period he experienced an out-of-body journey, entered heaven and encountered Jesus.

His account has since become central to his Christian ministry and his book, 18 Days in Heaven.

The latest viral clip prompted mockery and scepticism online. '5'11 is such a strangely specific detail,' one commenter joked, while another asked who had 'coached him' to include testosterone in the description. Others joked that turning 5 ft 11 in into six feet might be the most relatable part of the story.

What Did Historical Jesus Probably Look Like?

There is no surviving contemporary portrait or physical description capable of establishing Jesus' precise appearance, making Poirot's claimed 5 ft 11 in measurement impossible to verify historically.

Research by Joan Taylor, professor of Christian Origins and Second Temple Judaism at King's College London, offers a markedly different reconstruction based on archaeology, ancient texts and remains from first-century Judaea.

Taylor estimates an average man of the period stood around 5 ft 5 in. Jesus likely had olive-brown skin, brown eyes and dark brown or black hair, consistent with a Jewish man from the region.

The Gospels themselves provide no detailed description of Jesus's height, facial features or physique.

Moreover, history can offer clues about how a Jewish man from first-century Judaea may have looked, while faith has produced countless different images of Jesus across cultures and generations. Poirot's Mustang comparison may be the latest and certainly one of the more unexpected additions to that much older mystery.
