Social media users have rounded on Ivanka Trump after her lifestyle brand tweeted about making champagne popsicles for Memorial Day.

The account named "IvankaTrumpHQ" tweeted "Make champagne popsicles this #MemorialDay" as a way to "kick off the summer".

The tweet included a link to the Ivanka Trump website with a list of tips to enjoy the day.

As well as popsicles, the list suggested wearing all-white and "blasting some tunes".

Ivanka later tweeted from her own personal account saying: "Today we honour the men & women in our armed forces who have lost their lives to protect our freedom. Thank you for your service."

The message soon went viral with some turning it into a meme or simply criticising it.

Several memes went out mocking the idea, including one that read: "Remember our sacrifice, by making champagne popsicles."

Traditionally, Memorial Day is used to remember those who died on active service for the US armed forces.

Ivanka Trump serves as a senior advisor to her father and has been seen at a number of high profile meetings and representing the US at talks including at a women's summit in Berlin last month alongside German leader Angela Merkel.

Her husband, Jared Kushner, has been thrust into the limelight over the past few days after it emerged that the FBI was looking into the role he played during the Trump campaign and transition.
