The ghosts of the Metropolitan Correctional Center are back in the digital spotlight. A new flood of millions of documents from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has revived one of the most persistent conspiracy theories of the modern era.

The 'body swap' theory, which claims Jeffrey Epstein was secretly removed and replaced by a decoy before his reported suicide, has circulated on the fringes of the internet for years. But the release of new subpoena records revealing the identity of a mysterious prison insider has reignited speculation on social media, starting a new wave of debate that shows no signs of fading.

Epstein, who was 66 when he was found unresponsive in his cell on Aug. 10, 2019, was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. While multiple official investigations have concluded that his death was a suicide resulting from systemic guard negligence and protocol failures, the material released on Jan. 30, 2026 provides a specific name to a previously anonymous figure.

The Man Behind the Jeffrey Epstein 4chan Leak

A 4chan post published on the morning of Epstein's death, about an hour before the first news reports, is at the centre of the renewed interest. The anonymous user claimed to have witnessed 'unusual' activity inside the Manhattan facility, telling a story that appeared to contradict the official account of a man hanging himself in a solitary cell.

Online sleuths and conspiracy theorists now say the DOJ records identify the poster as Roberto Grijalva, a lieutenant at the Metropolitan Correctional Center at the time of the incident. According to the documents, Grijalva's name appeared in Citibank records provided in response to a grand jury subpoena issued by then-US Attorney Geoffrey Berman.

Berman's office sought records from 4chan, Apple, AT&T and Citibank in an effort to unmask the anonymous user behind the suspicious post. The subpoena aimed to identify the individual who claimed Epstein had been moved from his cell on Friday evening and shackled in a medical wheelchair.

The original post, which has circulated for years as supposed evidence of a prison break, alleged that an unmarked transport van entered the facility without signing in and that guards were bewildered by the arrival of an 'unauthorised trip van' the night before the news broke.

'You guys I am shaking right now but I think they switched him out,' the post read. The fact that Grijalva also provided official statements during the prison's internal investigation into Epstein's death has only fuelled speculation among those convinced of a high-level cover-up.

Official Findings vs the Jeffrey Epstein Conspiracy

Despite the sensational nature of these leaks, official bodies remain steadfast in rejecting the body swap narrative. Federal investigators have consistently pointed to autopsy findings, video metadata and witness testimony, which leave no room for a secret switch. Multiple DOJ reviews instead depicted a prison in chaos, where guards falsified logs to cover their negligence and failed to perform required checks.

The persistence of the theory is often linked to the 'unusually lenient' 2008 plea deal Epstein received in Florida, which fostered deep public distrust in the justice system's ability to hold him accountable. While the unmasking of Roberto Grijalva as a likely prison employee with intimate knowledge of the facility adds a new layer of intrigue, it does not, according to investigators, undermine the medical and forensic evidence of suicide.

As journalists and researchers continue sifting through the millions of released documents, the case remains a sobering example of how information gaps in high-profile tragedies can be filled by enduring myth. For now, the official ruling stands: Jeffrey Epstein died in his cell. Yet, for a world still seeking answers, the name Roberto Grijalva has become the latest piece in an unending puzzle.
