Is Kai Trump Out of Touch? Here's Why Donald's Granddaughter Is Getting Rinsed Online
Kai Trump accused of being out of touch following Erewhon purchases, comments made in YouTube vlog

Kai Trump, the 18-year-old granddaughter of President Donald Trump, has drawn criticism online after posting a YouTube vlog showing herself shopping at Erewhon, a high-end Los Angeles grocery chain, with her Secret Service detail in tow. The video, originally titled 'I Brought My Secret Service to Erewhon', sparked widespread backlash, with viewers accusing her of flaunting her position at a time when many Americans are facing mounting economic pressure amid an active war.
The reaction reflects ongoing friction over Kai's public profile. The daughter of Donald Trump Jr, she has cultivated a following as a vlogger and social media influencer by presenting aspects of her day-to-day life, attending school, playing sports, and spending time with friends, as broadly relatable. The Erewhon video, for many viewers, challenged that framing.
Why the Erewhon Video Drew Criticism
In the two-minute clip, Kai is shown browsing the upscale chain while flanked by Secret Service agents, purchasing a range of items including vitamins, a $12.99 (approximately £10.25) bottle of water, and a tuna sushi platter. Her total spend was reported at $233 (approximately £184). Back at her hotel, she filmed herself unboxing and sampling each item, rating most of them on camera. She praised the Hailey Bieber-branded smoothie but filmed herself spitting out the tuna sushi.
The video was subsequently retitled 'I Tried the World's Most Expensive Grocery Store', though the original framing, which placed her taxpayer-funded security detail at the centre of the vlog's premise, had already spread widely across social media. Screenshots and clips from the video circulated across TikTok and X, drawing in viewers well beyond her existing subscriber base.
Flexing of Wealth Amid the War
While Erewhon haul videos are a familiar genre in online lifestyle content, Kai's drew a level of scrutiny that similar content from other creators has not. Critics focused on the use of her Secret Service detail, government-funded protection, as the hook of a shopping video, with one commentator describing the optics of 'rolling around California with a seven-vehicle motorcade' for a grocery run as 'a misfire.'
The timing of the upload intensified the criticism. Kai posted the video on 8 March, more than a week into the US-Israel war against Iran, which began with coordinated joint airstrikes on 28 February 2026. The conflict has driven oil prices higher and heightened economic anxiety for many Americans already contending with rising costs.
Netizens Criticise Trump's Granddaughter Kai
Several netizens took their thoughts in the comments section of Kai's YouTube video.
'I love that my taxes are funding this instead of school lunches,' one person wrote.
'You and Baron should be in Iran right now,' another person commented.
'Zero self-awareness. Marie Antoinette has been reincarnated,' a third person wrote.
'Title must be the most tone deaf thing I've ever read. Like legit lmao,' a fourth person commented.
A post on X calling on Kai to 'enlist' garnered more than 650,000 views. Despite the backlash, the YouTube video itself accumulated more than 300,000 views, a level of engagement that would generate advertising income for Kai's channel under the platform's standard monetisation terms.
