Keith Urban appeared to fight back tears on stage at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City while performing a heartbreak ballad. The emotional performance came about seven months after his divorce from Nicole Kidman was finalised.

During the 21 August concert, the 58-year-old musician introduced his song 'We Go Back,' which tells the story of former lovers reconnecting years after their relationship ended. It appears on his latest studio album, Flow State.

The album was released on 12 June 2026, about five months after a judge legally ended his 19-year marriage to Kidman. The Australian actress originally filed for divorce from the 'Steal Away' singer in September 2025.

The former couple had reportedly been living separately since the beginning of that summer. The divorce was finalised in January, closing a significant chapter for both celebrities. Fans have scrutinised their public appearances ever since.

A Vulnerable Moment in Atlantic City

Before performing the song, Urban explained its story to the audience. He told the crowd, 'This song is about a guy and a girl growing up in a small town.' The two grew up together and knew the same streets and places.

They were also the first of their friends to fall in love, he explained. They shared a strong romantic connection until the man made a mistake that cost him the relationship.

Urban then joked about the character's mistake, saying, 'I will do that.' According to footage from the performance, the singer continued explaining the story, saying several years passed before the characters crossed paths again.

The man was reportedly shocked to see his former lover looking as though she had not changed. They started talking and got along well after reuniting. However, the woman soon informed him she was already seeing someone new.

The narrative drew cheers from the live crowd. The musician then recited the emotional chorus before performing the song, with the lyrics expressing deep regret over letting a former love slip away.

He sang about knowing he should never have let his former partner go and regretting how he had ruined their relationship when he was younger. The woman then tells the man that she has someone new in her life.

The man insists they share a bond the new partner does not have. During the performance, Urban appeared visibly emotional and was seen wiping his face as the audience cheered.

The timing inevitably attracted attention because of Urban's recent divorce, although he did not say the song or his emotional reaction was about Kidman. In fact, Urban has said he co-wrote 'We Go Back' in 2020, years before their marriage ended.

This public display of emotion also comes amid recent headlines concerning his former wife. Kidman sparked fresh romance rumours in July after she was linked to American businessman Michael Reinstein.

The 59-year-old star was reportedly spotted with Reinstein, a private equity businessman, during a trip to Italy. Subsequent sightings added to speculation that the two were romantically involved. Neither Kidman nor Reinstein has publicly confirmed a romantic relationship.

The Practical Magic star typically keeps her personal affairs private. However, she recently offered a rare glimpse into her current mindset following the end of her marriage.

During a recent interview, she reflected on how differently her life had unfolded from what she once expected. She said, 'I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now.'
