The Canadian actor, best known for cult comedies Superbad, Juno, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, revealed in a new interview on The Louis Theroux Podcast that he was offered a significant role in the J.K. Rowling-led Harry Potter spin-off — widely assumed to be Jacob Kowalski, later played by Dan Fogler.

'I had a big fear of doing things that would get me too famous,' Cera told Theroux. He confessed that even attending events or starring in mainstream franchises triggered intense anxiety during his twenties, leading him to avoid roles that could skyrocket his visibility.

Why Michael Cera Said No to Fantastic Beasts?

Cera regarded the opportunity as 'amazing,' but the personal toll was too high at the time. The now-37-year-old actor stated that after Superbad's runaway success in 2007, he began experience 'spotlight syndrome,' a type of fame-induced anxiety.

'I'd go out to a party and have a total panic attack,' he said. 'I didn't know how to process it all. I didn't like people taking my picture.'

At the height of his fame, Cera was recognised constantly, particularly in Los Angeles. He told Theroux that he often felt 'on edge' and even chose to stay home more often to avoid fan interactions that felt intrusive or overwhelming.

A Six-Year Commitment Was Too Much

While Cera did not reveal the character's identity, sources from Entertainment Weekly and Screen Rant indicate he was offered the role of Jacob Kowalski, the No-Maj bakery owner and buddy of protagonist Newt Scamander.

'It was a six-year commitment,' Cera said. 'I was just scared of that. I didn't want to lose my life to it.'

Indeed, the Fantastic Beasts franchise, which launched in 2016, was originally supposed to include five films. However, only three were released when Warner Bros. cancelled further installments in 2022 due to mixed reviews and concerns surrounding the brand.

Now Willing to Embrace Franchises

Interestingly, Cera's perspective has altered in recent years. He claims he would now explore a role in a major studio series, admitting that the fear that once held him back no longer influences his decisions.

'I've outgrown that feeling,' he said. 'I feel more grounded in myself now.'

The revelation comes as fans debate which actors may have slipped through the cracks of the Wizarding World. Cera's name is now added to the list of Hollywood stars who nearly joined the Harry Potter universe but stepped away at the last moment.
