Nick Shirley Applies for Job at Elon Musk's X, Saying It Is 'Nearly Too Dangerous' for Him To Film

Nick Shirley said on Sunday, 20 September, that he wanted to work for X after the platform advertised a creator-growth role.

The YouTuber and independent journalist said filming was becoming 'nearly too dangerous' and expressed interest directly beneath the recruitment post.

Shirley has repeatedly said he faced threats and attempts to expose his location after his December 2025 reporting in Minnesota.

His 42-minute video, 'I Investigated Minnesota's Billion Dollar Fraud Scandal,' questioned payments to childcare centres and other publicly funded providers.

Nick Shirley Makes Public Pitch for X Role

Allegra Jacchia, whose X profile lists her as working in Creators Product, announced on 20 September that her team was expanding. She said the role would help bring new creators to X while supporting existing users trying to grow.

Jacchia described it as a founding position on a small team, with an emphasis on independence, strategy and hands-on execution. She said the role would focus heavily on women and lifestyle creators, with a strong preference for Los Angeles or San Francisco.

Shirley replied beneath the post and made his interest clear. 'I'd like to work for X, it's becoming nearly too dangerous for me to even film anymore. I understand the platform just as much as anyone from a creator perspective and believe in the mission of X. Let's make it happen.'

The reply was a public expression of interest, not evidence that X had hired him or received a formal application. His wording echoed earlier comments about security concerns surrounding his work. In March, Shirley told Fox News that people had shared photographs and location details in Reddit group chats while he was filming.

He said some posts identified where he was staying or working, and that he sometimes needed professional security. Those accounts remain Shirley's claims.

Shirley also discussed threats during a 31 December 2025 appearance on the PBD Podcast. He said people had told him he would be 'Kirked,' referring to conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The FBI says Kirk was shot and killed at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on 10 September 2025. Shirley's use of the phrase reflected the seriousness he attached to the threats he said he had received.

Nick Shirley's Minnesota Reporting Put Him in Spotlight

Shirley's profile rose after he published his Minnesota video on 26 December 2025. The footage showed him visiting childcare centres and other service providers while questioning how public funds were being used.

By 21 September 2026, YouTube listed the video at about 4.2 million views. Its title made a broader claim than the footage alone could prove. The video did not establish fraud by every business it featured.

Minnesota was already dealing with major public-programme fraud investigations before Shirley's video appeared. Federal prosecutors had brought separate cases involving housing, autism services and other programmes during 2025.

State officials later inspected nine childcare centres referenced in Shirley's video. In a January update, Minnesota's Department of Children, Youth and Families said all nine were 'operating as expected.'

Children were present at eight centres. The ninth had not yet opened for families when investigators arrived. Four centres remained under investigation at the time. That finding did not prove every concern Shirley raised was unfounded. An inspection result is not the same as a final determination on every allegation.

Later developments added another layer. Federal prosecutors charged the owner of Future Leaders Early Learning Center, one of the businesses Minnesota identified as appearing in Shirley's video.

Those allegations concern that defendant. They do not establish wrongdoing by every centre or provider featured in Shirley's reporting.

Shirley later testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on 15 July 2026. The committee listed him as an independent journalist during its 'Exposing Fraud in America' hearing.

His latest X reply brings his creator work and his repeated security claims into the same frame. For now, however, the public record shows only that Shirley wants the role. Neither Jacchia's recruitment post nor Shirley's response shows that X has formally offered him a position.
