Prince Harry's UK return has renewed debate over how he wants Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to understand their royal heritage. Fox News published the debate on 20 September, citing commentators who questioned how that aim sits beside his decision to leave royal duties.

People first reported the Sussexes' extended UK move on 19 August. Harry and Meghan Markle returned on 26 August without resuming roles as working royals. Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, began school in Britain after the family's return.

Their parents later changed the children's school arrangements after security concerns about the commute. A spokesperson told Reuters on 14 September that the decision followed discussions with the family's security team. The spokesperson said the move did not reflect concerns about the school or its staff.

People also reported, citing an unnamed source, that Harry wants his children to understand the world he grew up in and their family origins. That is narrower than saying he wants to recreate his own royal upbringing.

Prince Harry's Return Revives Questions About Royal Life

Harry and Meghan stepped back as working members of the Royal Family in 2020 and later moved to California. They subsequently pursued financial independence through commercial deals, including agreements with Netflix and Spotify.

Their relationship with the institution later became the subject of interviews, documentaries and Harry's memoir, Spare. In May 2025, Harry told the BBC he would 'love reconciliation' with his family.

He also said, at that point, that security concerns made it difficult to envisage bringing Meghan and their children back to Britain. The family's 2026 return therefore reflects changed circumstances, but it does not amount to a return to official royal duties.

Kinsey Schofield, host of Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered, told Fox News that she saw a 'contradiction' in Harry's position. She argued that leaving royal duties was easier than leaving behind the history and identity attached to them.

That remains Schofield's interpretation, not an established fact about Harry's motives. The reporting from People attributes a more limited aim to Harry, namely helping Archie and Lilibet understand his background and their family roots.

Hilary Fordwich also told Fox News that Harry's wish for his children to know their British heritage was understandable. She nevertheless said she doubted wider family trust could be restored.

Harry publicly welcomed being back in Britain this month. Speaking at the Invictus Spirit Awards in London on 17 September, he told Reuters: 'It's good to be back on British soil.'

Archie and Lilibet's connection to the monarchy is more than cultural. The Royal Family's official line of succession lists Harry fifth, Archie sixth and Lilibet seventh.

Prince William is first in line, followed by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Those positions give Archie and Lilibet a formal place within the succession, separate from their parents' non-working status.

Family relationships remain a more private matter. People reported on 9 September, citing a source, that Harry and King Charles III spoke by phone during Harry's first week back in Britain.

The same publication reported that the family met the King and Queen Camilla at Highgrove in July. It said the visit was Charles's first meeting with Meghan, Archie and Lilibet since 2022.

Fox News also quoted Schofield as saying any closer relationship between the cousins would depend on trust between their parents. 'Harry cannot expect the children to repair what the adults have broken,' she said.

That comment is opinion rather than verified evidence of private family discussions. British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard offered a less definite view, saying children can sometimes 'serve as a bridge' between strained relatives.

The public facts are clearer than the speculation around family tensions. Harry and Meghan remain outside the working Royal Family, while Archie and Lilibet are now living and studying in Britain.

That arrangement gives the children closer access to Harry's British background without reversing the couple's 2020 decision to leave official royal duties.
