MAGA Nicki Minaj Goes From 'American Idol' to Judging Trump Admin's $1 Million Pitch Competition

The US Small Business Administration (SBA) has named the rapper Nicki Minaj to the celebrity panel that will judge its Million Dollar Pitch Competition, a live contest awarding $1M (£741,000) to five small businesses. The final takes place in Washington, DC, on 18 September 2026.

The agency unveiled the line-up on 31 August. Five vetted entrepreneurs will pitch their companies before the judges, and each is guaranteed a share of the prize pool, which is funded by the payments firm Clover Network, Inc.

It is not Minaj's first seat at a judging table. She spent the 2013 season of American Idol alongside Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, and Keith Urban, a run remembered as much for her on-air feud with Carey as for the singers it produced. Forbes reported at the time that the single season earned her $12M (£8.9M). More than a decade later, she has swapped vocal runs for business plans.

Joining her are two figures from the business world. Grant Cardone, a real estate investor and bestselling sales author, runs the multibillion-dollar Cardone Capital and founded the 10X Movement. Joe Gebbia, who co-founded Airbnb and sits on its board and Tesla's, became the first US Chief Design Officer under President Donald Trump in 2025. He also founded Samara, a company that builds factory-made homes. Dean Cain, the actor who played Superman in the 1990s series Lois & Clark, will host.

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler called the four 'Great American entrepreneurs themselves.' She said their real-world experience would help spotlight the finalists, and billed the panel as an all-star line-up for the grand finale.

What the Finalists Are Pitching For

The five finalists emerged from a nationwide field that entered earlier in the year, with the shortlist confirmed on 30 July. They are Compotech, Inc., a defence technology firm in Brewer, Maine; Winton Machine of Suwanee, Georgia; Plas-Tech Tooling of Garner, Iowa; Red River of Gillette, Wyoming; and VetPowered LLC of San Diego, California.

The awards are fixed in advance. The winner takes $400,000 (£296,400), with $250,000 (£185,250) for second place and $150,000 (£111,150) for third. Fourth place collects $125,000 (£92,625) and fifth $75,000 (£55,575), bringing the Clover-funded pool to the full $1M (£741,000).

Unlike Shark Tank, where founders surrender equity for investment, the SBA is awarding cash with no stake attached, and the money comes from Clover rather than the agency itself. The contest falls under the SBA's Freedom 250 initiative, which marks 250 years of American free enterprise in the anniversary year of American independence.

Minaj's Move Into Trump's Orbit

For Minaj, the appointment caps a year of visible support for the president. She stood beside Trump at the Treasury Department's Trump Accounts Summit on 28 January 2026, and attended the premiere of a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump.

She has described herself as one of his most enthusiastic backers.

She greeted the judging role on X as a 'major, MAJOR KEY', telling followers she was eager to support the administration's small-business drive. In choosing her, the SBA pointed to a business empire that reaches beyond music into a record label imprint, a fragrance line, and consumer products.

The competition borrows its format from television staples such as Shark Tank, known in Britain as Dragons' Den, and Trump's own former series The Apprentice. The SBA has not said whether the judges are being paid, or whether the finale will be broadcast.
