NYC Shooting Suspect Identified as Shane Tamura: Who Is He and What Led to the Manhattan Crime That Killed a Police Officer?
Victims were shot inside a major Manhattan office building

A 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, identified as Shane Tamura, opened fire at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on the evening of Monday, 28 July 2025. The shooting resulted in the death of an off-duty NYPD officer and at least two other fatalities.
Several other civilians were wounded during the incident, which took place inside an office tower housing prominent tenants including Blackstone, KPMG, and the NFL headquarters.
Timeline of the Shooting at 345 Park Avenue
According to NYPD and eyewitness accounts, Tamura entered the skyscraper carrying an assault-style rifle and began firing at random in the lobby area. The New York Post confirmed that the firearm is a Palmetto State Armory AR-15 assault rifle in .223-caliber. Multiple people were struck by gunfire, including a police officer who was working as a private security guard.
The suspect reportedly engaged in a shootout with an NYPD officer in the lobby around 6:40 p.m. ET, according to a law enforcement source cited by CNN. He then proceeded to the 33rd floor, where he was later discovered in a stairwell, deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The office tower was placed on full lockdown during the response. Roads surrounding Park Avenue and 51st Street were closed as emergency services secured the area.
Who Was Shane Tamura?
Suspect Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Nevada resident, is reportedly carrying a valid concealed-carry permit issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 2022, as reported by Economic Times. Law enforcement officials said Tamura had no known criminal record, though he legally acquired firearms in Nevada, where gun ownership laws differ significantly from those in New York.
Investigators are examining Tamura's travel records, digital communications, and potential connections to anyone working in the building. No motive has been confirmed, and officials have not stated whether he targeted any specific individual or company, including Blackstone or the NFL offices.
FBI and NYPD officials are also coordinating with Nevada authorities to conduct a full background check.
Victims and Injuries Confirmed by Officials
The shooting left at least three people dead, including the gunman. One of the victims has been identified as an off-duty NYPD officer, while the identities of the other victims have not yet been released. Multiple individuals were injured, several of whom remain in critical condition at area hospitals.
Security Questions Surrounding Blackstone Tower Incident
345 Park Avenue is considered one of the most secure office towers in New York City. With high-profile tenants such as Blackstone, the incident has raised questions about how a heavily armed individual managed to enter the premises undetected.
Building security reportedly included armed guards, access-controlled elevators, and bag screenings. Despite the building's advanced security, including staffed lobbies and controlled access, Tamura's entry while armed has sparked concerns about vulnerabilities in even the most secure towers.
Authorities are now reviewing surveillance footage and building access logs to determine how Tamura gained entry with a weapon.
Investigation Ongoing Amid Public Concern
NYPD and FBI investigators are continuing to examine Tamura's motives. No manifesto or direct statement has been found, and officials have not ruled out any possible motives, including workplace-related grievances or ideological extremism.
