Meghan Markle Reportedly Needs a 'Local Grande Dame' to Help Her Navigate Exclusive Social Circles
An unnamed friend says the Duchess of Sussex is taking a quieter approach as she and Prince Harry settle back into Britain

Meghan Markle could benefit from the support of a well-connected British matriarch as she navigates social life in the Cotswolds following her return with Prince Harry, royal columnist Alison Boshoff reported on 31 October 2026.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have returned to Britain after several years in the United States.
Their reported stay in the Cotswolds has attracted attention, particularly as they consider where to establish a permanent home.
In a column published on 31 October, Boshoff quoted an unnamed friend who suggested Meghan was approaching British society differently from her earlier years in the country.
The source described a quieter approach to public appearances and personal relationships.
Friend Suggests British Matriarch Could Help Meghan
According to Boshoff, the friend believes Meghan is making a conscious effort to adjust to British social expectations. The source suggested she wanted to appear more 'low-key and respectful' than during her previous time in Britain.
The friend also proposed that an established woman within the country's affluent social circles could help Meghan develop relationships.
'It only takes one matriarch!' the source told Boshoff.
Such support could potentially introduce Meghan to people and gatherings within Britain's established social networks. However, the suggestion represents the friend's opinion rather than a confirmed arrangement.
There is no evidence that Meghan has approached anyone for assistance or that a particular social figure has offered to help her.
The comments come amid speculation about the Sussexes' private social lives. Boshoff suggested the couple have maintained a relatively limited presence at gatherings in London and the Cotswolds.
Her account mentioned occasional sightings at Soho Farmhouse and visits from American friends. Boshoff also reported that Meghan had spent time with television presenter Ellen DeGeneres in the area, although that meeting has not been independently confirmed.
The columnist raised the possibility that some prospective hosts might hesitate to invite the couple. However, no named host confirmed excluding them, and their limited public appearances do not establish the extent of their private friendships.
Meghan Markle's Public Image Faces Renewed Attention
Questions about Meghan's standing in Britain have also emerged following the publication of new opinion polling.
According to YouGov's royal family favourability tracker, published on 29 October, just 20 per cent of Britons held a favourable opinion of Meghan, while 68 per cent viewed her unfavourably.
Prince Harry received a favourable rating of 29 per cent, compared with 60 per cent who expressed an unfavourable opinion.
The findings suggest that public perceptions of the couple remain challenging following their return. However, national polling does not measure their personal relationships or whether individuals within private social circles are willing to welcome them.
Despite those figures, friends quoted by Boshoff maintained that the Sussexes remain committed to establishing their lives in Britain.
The couple's charitable engagements have provided a more visible indication of their activities since returning.
On 15 October, Harry and Meghan visited Nottingham, meeting representatives of organisations supporting young people, families and disadvantaged communities.
Their itinerary included the Community Recording Studio, food poverty charity Himmah and youth organisation Epic Partners. The engagements were also documented by the Sussexes' official website.
One source cited the Nottingham visit as evidence of the couple's intention to reconnect with communities they previously supported.
Meghan Markle's British-Inspired Wardrobe Sparks Interest
Alongside her social life, Meghan's fashion choices have attracted attention as observers consider how she is presenting herself following her return.
Boshoff reported that an unnamed friend believed Meghan had reconsidered her previous approach to clothing, which sometimes highlighted particular designers or charitable causes.
'A lesson has been learned,' the friend claimed.
The columnist connected that assessment with promotional images for Meghan's As Ever lifestyle brand, which featured products and styling associated with traditional British tastes.
The holiday collection includes blue-and-white tableware and a leather notebook with a British penny tucked into a front pocket.
Another promotional photograph shows Meghan wearing a houndstooth blazer and carrying a Mulberry handbag.
Although the styling reflects recognisable elements of British fashion, the photographs do not establish that Meghan deliberately selected them to improve her standing within exclusive social circles.
Meanwhile, Boshoff reported that the Sussexes were staying at a property belonging to a wealthy friend in the Cotswolds while considering buying a home. Their accommodation arrangements and longer-term plans have not been independently confirmed.
According to Boshoff, the family also took a short break outside Britain during the school half-term holiday with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The precise destination and duration were not independently verified.
Friends have nevertheless rejected suggestions that Harry and Meghan are reconsidering their move.
'There is no buyer's remorse!' one source told Boshoff.
For now, the idea that Meghan needs an influential local figure remains an anonymous friend's suggestion rather than an established part of the Duchess of Sussex's plans.
